Chyna was born in Rochester, New York, on December 27, 1969, the daughter of Kathleen Louise (née Kidd) and Ronald Edward Salazar. She has two brothers: Alan and Anthony.

She won the Mr. Galaxy competition in 1991; this attracted the attention of World Wrestling Federation (WWF) booker Pat Patterson, who arranged for her to have a tryout. WWE officials were impressed with her athletic abilities, primarily because of her background in bodybuilding and football, and Laurer was signed to a WWF contract almost immediately under the ring name Chyna.
