How Do Tennis Spreads Work?

How do tennis spreads work? This is a question that we are often asked by our customers. While the answer may seem complicated, the concept is actually quite simple.

Introduction

When you bet on tennis, you’re actually betting on the outcome of a tennis match. This is done by placing a bet on either the player who will win the match, or the player who will lose the match. The player who wins the bet is the one who ends up with more points than the other player.

The way that tennis spreads work is that they give you an opportunity to bet on a particular outcome of a tennis match, without having to worry about who will actually win or lose the match. For example, if you were to bet on Roger Federer to beat Rafael Nadal in a tennis match, you would be placing a bet that Federer will win more games than Nadal. If Federer ends up winning 6-3, 6-4, then you would win your bet.

However, if Nadal were to come back and win the next two sets 7-5, 6-4, then you would lose your bet. This is because Nadal would have won more games than Federer overall.

Tennis spreads can be found for both matches and sets. For example, you might see a spread of 4.5 games for a particular match. This means that if you were to bet on Federer to win, he would need to win 5 games more than Nadal overall in order for you to win your bet. If he won 6-3, 6-4, then you would lose your bet as Nadal would have won 3 more games overall than Federer.

Moneyline

In tennis, the moneyline is the provider’s way of odds for a particular match. A moneyline is simply American odds and is listed as either a positive or negative number next to each tennis player. The number represents how much you need to bet in order to win $100. So, if the moneyline for a match is -250 that means you need to bet $250 to win $100. If the moneyline for a match is +350 that means a $100 bet will net you $350 in profit if your prediction wins.

Handicap

A handicap is a figure assigned by the bookmaker to each competitor in a contest, event or match in order to even out the odds. The higher the handicap, the greater the difference in ability between the two competitors. The underdog will have a positive handicap (+), while the favourite will have a negative handicap (-).

For example, if Player A has a handicap of +5 and Player B has a handicap of -5, this means that Player A is expected to win by 5 games and Player B is expected to lose by 5 games.

In order for there to be a winner in a handicap bet, the final score must reflect the difference in ability between the two competitors as specified by the handicap. If, after applying the handicap, one competitor has more points than their opponent, they are the winner of the bet.

Over/Under

Over/Under bets are the most popular type of tennis bet. As the name implies, these bets are simply wagers on whether the total number of games played in a match will be OVER or UNDER a specified number. The sportsbook sets a “total” for each match (usually between 21 and 31) and bettors need to decide whether there will be more or fewer games played than the number listed.

The most common type of over/under bet is the -110 bet, which means that you need to bet $110 to win $100. If the total you bet on is hit exactly, then you will be paid out at odds of -105, meaning you will win $95 for every $100 you bet.

Some sportsbooks also offer what are known as “mini-game” over/under bets. These are wagers on specific game scores rather than on the overall result of the match. For example, you might be able to bet on whether the first game will be won 6-0 or 6-1, or whether the score of the second game will be 0-0, 1-1, 2-2, etc.
