How Does the NHL Work?

Introduction

Many people are familiar with the National Hockey League (NHL), but not everyone knows how it works. The NHL is a professional ice hockey league that consists of 30 teams: 23 in the United States and 7 in Canada. These teams are divided into two conferences, the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference, each of which is further divided into three divisions.

The regular season runs from October to April, during which each team plays 82 games. At the end of the regular season, the top team in each division automatically Qualifies for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The next six teams with the most points (regardless of division) also qualify for the playoffs.

During the Stanley Cup Playoffs, teams compete in a best-of-seven series to determine who advances to the next round. The eventual winner of the playoffs is awarded the Stanley Cup, which is one of the oldest and most prestigious trophies in all of North American sports.

The Basics

The National Hockey League (NHL) is a professional ice hockey league in North America, currently comprising 31 teams: 24 in the United States and 7 in Canada. The NHL is considered to be the premier professional ice hockey league in the world, and one of the major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada.

The League

The National Hockey League (NHL) is a professional ice hockey league composed of 30 teams in North America. The NHL is considered to be the premier professional ice hockey league in the world, and one of the North American major professional sports leagues. It was established in 1917 as the successor to the National Hockey Association (NHA). After a dispute with Boston Bruins owner Charles Adams, the league was officially renamed the National Hockey League in 1926 and expanded into the United States, starting with the Boston Bruins expansion team in 1924.

The NHL’s regular season runs from October to April, with each team playing 82 games. The league is divided into two conferences:the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. Each conference is further subdivided into three divisions:the Atlantic Division, the Central Division, and the Pacific Division.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs are played in April and May, culminating in the Stanley Cup Finals. Eight teams from each conference compete for a chance to play for Lord Stanley’s Cup; each team that makes it to the playoffs has a chance to win it all.

The Teams

There are 31 teams in the NHL – 7 in Canada and 24 in the United States. The teams are split into 2 conferences – the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. Each conference has 3 divisions:

-The Atlantic Division: Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs.
-The Metropolitan Division: Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals.
-The Central Division: Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, St. Louis Blues , Winnipeg Jets.

The regular season runs from October to April and each team plays 82 games. At the end of the regular season, the top 3 teams in each division plus 2 wild card teams from each conference (the 2 next best teams regardless of division) make the playoffs. The playoffs are a single elimination tournament where the winner of each series advances until one team from each conference is left – these are the team who compete in the Stanley Cup Final.

The Players

Each team has a roster of 20 to 23 players. Forwards (usually three per side) score most of the goals. Defensemen (usually two or three per side) defend against the other team’s forwards, and also help move the puck up the ice. The remaining player is the goaltender, who tries to stop the other team from scoring.

At the start of each game, each team has six players on the ice: three forwards, two defensemen, and one goaltender. As the game goes on, players can be “shifted” onto and off of the ice in a process called “line changing.” This is done to give players rests, to change up strategy on the fly, or to react to how the other team is playing.

The NHL Schedule

The Regular Season

The regular season schedule is 82 games long, and teams play each other twice, once at home and once on the road. The NHL schedule is very heavily based on geography – since the league is made up of teams from Canada and the United States, almost all of the games are played within those two countries. As a result, there are a lot of ‘divisional’ games, where teams in the same division (there are four divisions in total) play each other more often than they play teams in other divisions.

There are also some ‘rivalry’ games that are played more often than others. These usually involve teams that are in close proximity to each other geographically, or who have a history of playoff battles. The most well-known rivalry in the NHL is between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens, which is also one of the oldest rivalries in all of professional sports.

The Playoffs

The top three teams in each of the four divisions qualify for the playoffs. The next two best teams in the conference, regardless of division, also qualify for the playoffs, giving each conference eight playoff teams. The playoff field is then seeded as follows:

1) The division winner with the best record in the conference is awarded the conference’s No. 1 seed.
2) The division winner with the second-best record in the conference is awarded the conference’s No. 2 seed.
3) The division winner with the third-best record in the conference is awarded the conference’s No. 3 seed.
4) The division winner with the fourth-best record in the conference is awarded the conference’s No. 4 seed.
5) The team in each conference with the fifth-best record is awarded a wild card berth.
6) The team in each conference with the sixth-best record is awarded a wild card berth.

The first two rounds of the playoffs are formatted like this:

In each series, the higher-seeded team has home-ice advantage, meaning it hosts Games 1, 2, 5 and 7 (if necessary). The lower-seeded team hosts Games 3, 4 and 6 (if necessary).

In every series during Round 1 and Round 2, if one team wins four games before its opponent wins three games (a “4–0” or “4–1” series victory), that team advances to play another series during Round 2 or Round 3 while its opponent becomes eliminated from further playoff contention for that season.

Conversely, if one team loses four games before its opponent wins three games (a “0–4” or “1–4” series defeat), that team becomes eliminated from further playoff contention for that season while its opponent advances to play another series during Round 2 or Round 3..

Conclusion

The NHL is a complex system with many different rules and regulations. However, the basic premise is that each team plays 82 games in a regular season. The playoffs then take place between the top teams in each conference, with the Stanley Cup being awarded to the winner.
