The answer to how high the NBA rim is may surprise you. Check out this blog to learn the answer and some interesting NBA history.
The NBA Rim
The NBA rim is 18 inches in diameter and is 10 feet high. The backboard is 6 feet wide and 42 inches tall. The foul line is 15 feet from the backboard.
The official NBA rim height
The official NBA rim height is 10 feet. However, many players are able to dunk the ball well below that height. The highest recorded dunk was by Vince Carter, who dunked the ball from a height of 12 feet 9 inches.
The average NBA player’s reach
Reach is an important factor in basketball. It determines how high a player can jump, how well they can shoot over defenders, and how strong their rebounding position is.
The average NBA player has a wingspan (the distance from the tips of their fingers to the tips of their opposite hand when fully extended) of about 7 feet 6 inches. The average height of an NBA player is just under 6 feet 7 inches.
However, there are some players who have exceptional reach. For example, Shaquille O’Neal, who is 7 feet 1 inch tall, has a wingspan of 8 feet 4 inches. This gives him an incredible advantage over shorter players.
How High Is the NBA Rim?
The NBA rim is 10 feet high. That’s pretty high! But did you know that the rim isn’t always 10 feet high? The height of the rim can actually vary depending on the size of the court. For example, the rim might be a little bit lower in a smaller court, like the one used in high school basketball.

The official NBA rim height is 10 feet.
The average NBA player’s reach
Most NBA players have a reach that is between 80 and 85 percent of their height. The average height of an NBA player is just over 6 feet 7 inches, which means their average reach is between 5 feet 9 inches and 6 feet 1 inch. There are always outliers, though. At 7 feet 3 inches, Houston Rockets center Yao Ming has an incredible wingspan of 8 feet 6 inches. That gives him a reach that is 112 percent of his height!
Why Does the NBA Have a Higher Rim?
The NBA has a higher rim than both the NCAA and FIBA. The main reason for this is because the NBA is a professional league and the players are taller and can jump higher than players in other leagues. Having a higher rim also makes it more difficult to make a shot, which can make the games more exciting to watch.
The official NBA rim height
The official NBA rim height is 10 feet. But in some cases, it can be higher or lower depending on the specific arena or court. For example, the rims at Madison Square Garden are actually 11 feet high. And during the Slam Dunk Contest at All-Star Weekend, the rims are lowered to just 7 feet.
But why is the NBA rim set at 10 feet in the first place? Well, it actually has a lot to do with player safety.
You see, when the NBA was first founded back in 1946, the original rim height was set at 11 feet. But after a few years of watching players jumping and hanging on the rim after slam dunks, the league decided to lower the height to 10 feet in order to prevent injuries.
And while there have been calls from some players and fans to lower the rim height again (especially after seeing some incredible dunks from players like Vince Carter and LeBron James), there’s no plans to change it anytime soon. So for now, 10 feet remains the official NBA rim height.
The average NBA player’s reach
The average NBA player is about 6’7″ tall, with a wingspan of about 7’3″. That gives them a reach of about 8’1″, which is just enough to touch the top of a 10-foot rim. So why is the NBA rim only 10 feet high?
The answer goes back to the early days of basketball. When James Naismith invented the game in 1891, he originally wanted it to be an indoor sport that could be played by both men and women. To make it more accessible, he chose a lower rim height (9 feet) so that players didn’t need to jump too high.
In 1912, the International YMCA Training School (now Springfield College) adopted Naismith’s rules and became the first college to play basketball. By this time, the game had become more physical, and players were starting to dunk the ball. In order to discourage this and keep the game safer, the school raised the rim height to 10 feet.
The change stuck, and when basket goals were standardized in 1929, they were set at 10 feet. The NBA followed suit when it was founded in 1946, making it the only major basketball league in the world with a 10-foot rim.
