How Is the NBA All-Star Team Selected?

The NBA All-Star team is selected by a combination of fan, player, and media voting. There are two teams of 12 players each, and each team consists of five starters and seven reserves.

The Selection Process

The NBA All-Star team is selected through a combination of fan, player, and media voting. Fans account for 50 percent of the vote, while players and a media panel each account for 25 percent. Players and media members each submit their own ballot, and they can vote for any player, regardless of conference.

The All-Star starters are chosen by a combination of fan, player, and media voting

The fan vote serves as the “primary tiebreaker” for the All-Star Game starters. Fan voting opens on Christmas Day (December 25) and continues until 11:59 pm ET on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (the third Monday in January). The fans account for 50 percent of the vote to determine the All-Star Game starters. NBA players and a media panel each account for 25 percent of the votes. Current NBA players may vote for their fellow peers two times per day from December 25 to January 21.

There are two ways for fans to vote:

1) Vote online at NBA.com/asb
2) Vote using hashtags on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook

The All-Star reserves are chosen by a vote among the head coaches of each NBA team

Coaches vote for All-Star reserves, including two guards, three frontcourt players and two additional players regardless of position. They are not allowed to vote for players from their own team. All current NBA head coaches are eligible to vote.

The All-Star Game

The National Basketball Association (NBA) All-Star Game is an annual exhibition basketball game that takes place between February and March of every year, featuring 24 of the best players from the Eastern and Western Conferences.

The rosters for the NBA All-Star Game are selected through a combination of fan, coach, and player voting. Each group’s vote counts for one third of the total. The fan vote is open to all NBA fans who vote online or via social media. The coach’s vote is restricted to the head coaches from each conference, who select two guards, three frontcourt players, and two “wild cards.” The player vote is also restricted to two guards and three frontcourt players from each conference.

In order to be eligible for selection, a player must have played in at least one game during the first half of the NBA season (usually late January/early February). Players who have been traded to a team in a different conference are also eligible to be selected for that conference’s All-Star team.

The game is usually played on the last Sunday of February

The National Basketball Association (NBA) All-Star Game is a basketball exhibition game hosted every February by the National Basketball Association (NBA), matching a mix of the league’s star players, who are drafted by the two players with the most votes. Each team consists of 12 players, making it 24 in total. It is the featured event of NBA All-Star Weekend, a three-day celebration held annually to honor the league’s star players.

The All-Star Game was first played during the 1951–52 season as a part of the merger between the National Basketball League (NBL) and the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The game was originally intended to be played between two teams of five players each, but in an effort to increase fan interest, three additional All-Stars from each side were added for a total of 12 per team.

Over time, various changes have been made to the All-Star Game. The Eastern Conference and Western Conference were formed in 1970 when four additional franchises were added to each side, thus increasing the number of All-Stars on each team to 11; this number remained constant until 1987 when it was increased to 12 per side. After 1998, home court advantage for the All-Star Game would be awarded to that year’s playoff teams with the better record; prior to that, whoever had recently hosted an NBA Finals Game was given home court advantage. In 2004, fan votes decided who would start on each team rather than having coaches make those decisions; this format continued until 2017 when a player pool was created containing both fan favorites and talented players who may have been left off the vote due primarily to their conference or position; all active players are now eligible for selection regardless of conference or position.

The starter selection process returned in 2018, but instead used a draft method similar to that used in fantasy basketball games; this allowed two captains selected by career points scored and fan approval ratings respectively to choose their own rosters from among all eligible players without regard for conference or position. This same method is currently used today.
