Simmons was born in Melbourne to Melissa and David Simmons. His father is African-American and his mother is Caucasian; he has dual American and Australian citizenship. His parents met while his mother was working as a nanny in Melbourne. When Simmons was eight months old, his family moved from Blackburn South to Newcastle 130 kilometers north of Sydney where he would spend most of his childhood. His father played basketball at Oklahoma City University and Fordham University, before playing professional basketball in Australia, New Zealand and Sweden.
High School Career

The following year, he once again led Box Hill to a championship while being named MVP and averaging 30 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists per game.

On March 9, 2016, Simmons was named the AP college basketball player of the year.
