On August 31, 2019, Herbert was named the starting quarterback for the Los Angeles Chargers after Philip Rivers was traded to the Indianapolis Colts. Herbert made his NFL debut on September 22, 2019 against the Miami Dolphins and helped lead the team to a 30-10 victory. In his rookie season, Herbert started in 11 games, winning five of them. He set multiple franchise records, including most passing yards and touchdowns by a rookie in a single season.

Played for the University of Oregon
Herbert started his collegiate career as a redshirt freshman in 2016. That season, he became the first Oregon freshman quarterback to start a season opener since 1983.[1] He finished the season with 2,287 passing yards, 19 passing touchdowns, and four interceptions.[2] As a redshirt sophomore in 2017, Herbert was again named the starter. He threw for 1,983 yards, 15 touchdowns, and five interceptions before suffering a collarbone injury against Cal which sidelined him for the remainder of the season.[3][4] As a junior in 2018, Herbert returned from his injury and started all 13 games. He threw for 3,151 yards and 29 passing touchdowns (both school records),[5] and ran for five touchdowns. Following the season he was named First Team All-Pac-12.[6] After initially declaring himself eligible for the 2019 NFL Draft,[7] Herbert decided to return to Oregon for his senior year on December 26, 2018.

In his first year as a starter in 2016, Herbert won the Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year. He also set a new Oregon freshman passing record with 2,644 yards. Herbert was named a Freshman All-American by ESPN and USA Today.
