2017 NFL Draft

Patrick Mahomes was drafted in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. He played college football at Texas Tech, where he was a three-year starter for the Red Raiders. Mahomes’ 5,052 passing yards were the most in a single season in Texas Tech history and the second most in NCAA history behind only Keenan Reynolds’ 5,129 passing yards in 2013. His 41 touchdown passes tied Graham Harrell’s Big 12 record set in 2007 and marked the ninth time a quarterback had thrown for 40 or more touchdowns in a season in NCAA history. He was named first-team All-Big 12 by both the coaches and the media.

High School Career

Patrick Mahomes started playing football at a young age. He played in Pop Warner and then continued to play in high school. Mahomes was originally going to go to the University of Texas to play baseball, but then he decided to go to Mississippi State University to play football instead.

In his senior season, Mahomes led Whitehouse to a 16–0 record and the Class 4A Division I state championship, throwing for 4,638 yards and 50 touchdowns with just five interceptions. He also ran for 12 touchdowns. For his efforts, he was named the 2012 Gatorade Football Player of the Year for Texas, the 2012 Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Player of the Year, and the 2012 Associated Press Sports Editors Class 4A State Player of the Year.

2013 Season

After redshirting his freshman year, Mahomes saw limited action in his first season of play in 2014. He completed 5 of 9 passes for 46 yards and a touchdown in a limited role as a backup to starter Davis Webb. The following season, he appeared in seven games, starting one. He completed 58 of 89 passes for 817 yards with five touchdowns and one interception.
