In his only season with the team, he was named Consensus first-team All-American and USBWA National Freshman of the Year. After being drafted by the Hawks, he was subsequently traded to the Dallas Mavericks on draft night.

The following season, he averaged 26.4 points, 8.7 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game, leading Norman North to a 24–4 record and the Class 6A state semifinals.

In 2017, Young was named the Gatorade Player of the Year in Oklahoma after averaging 42 points, 8.7 assists and 5.2 rebounds per game during his senior season at Norman North High School. He was also named a McDonald’s All-American and aJordan Brand Classic All-American.
