How Many Asian Players Are in the NFL?
Contents
With the NFL season kicking off this week, we take a look at how many Asian players are in the league.
The History of Asians in the NFL
Though the National Football League has only had a handful of Asian-American players throughout its history, the number of Asians in the NFL has been on the rise in recent years. In 2014, there were a record-high 14 Asian-American players in the NFL, and that number has only grown in the years since. Here’s a look at the history of Asians in the NFL.
Early years
Few Asian Americans have played in the National Football League (NFL). The first known was Japanese American Ken DRM Yamauchi, who played for the Tempe Raiderettes of the World Football League in 1974. Jimmy Chen was the first Chinese American to play in the NFL, suiting up for two games with the New York Jets in 1987. Problems with racial discrimination and cultural differences were likely some of the barriers that prevented more Asians from playing in the NFL during these early years.
The first Asian player in the NFL
The first Asian player in the NFL wasrunning back O.J. Simpson, who was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the first round of the 1969 NFL Draft.
The first Asian-American player in the NFL
The first Asian-American player in the NFL was Eugene Quan, who played for the Los Angeles Rams in 1973. Quan was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to a Chinese father and Japanese mother. He played collegiately at the University of Washington, and was drafted in the 11th round of the 1973 NFL Draft by the Rams. Quan played two seasons with the Rams, before being released and ending his professional football career.
The Current Number of Asians in the NFL
As of the 2019 NFL season, there are a total of fourteen Asian players in the NFL. This number includes one player who is of mixed Asian and Caucasian descent, and another who is of mixed Asian and Native American descent. Asians make up less than one percent of the NFL population.

The Future of Asians in the NFL
The NFL has seen a recent increase in the number of Asian players. This is thanks to the success of players like Eagles’ quarterback Carson Wentz and Bengals’ linebacker A.J. Tarpley. This surge of Asian players is a trend that doesn’t seem to be slowing down. In fact, with the recent success of players like Wentz and Tarpley, it seems that the NFL is becoming more open to the idea of having Asian players in the league.
The influx of Asian players
In recent years, there has been an influx of Asian players in the National Football League (NFL). In 2018, six Asian players were on NFL rosters, including Seattle Seahawks linebacker Mychal Kendricks, Los Angeles Rams lineman Austin Blythe, and free-agent linebacker Paul Posluszny. This is a significant increase from just two Asian players in the NFL in 2014.
The trend appears to be continuing, as there are currently nine Asians in the NFL, including San Francisco 49ers defensive end Cassius Marsh, who is of Samoan and Japanese descent. This is the most Asians ever to be in the NFL at one time.
There are a number of factors that have contributed to this trend. First, there has been an increase in the number of Asian immigrants to the United States in recent years. Second, more and more Asians are playing football at the collegiate level. Finally, Asians have been increasingly visible in the media and pop culture, which has helped to make football a more popular sport among Asians.
It is unclear how long this trend will continue, but it is clear that Asians are becoming more involved in the sport of football.
The rise of Asian-American players
The number of Asian-American players in the NFL has been on the rise in recent years. In 2015, there were 21 Asian-American players in the NFL, comprising 1.8 percent of the league’s total population. This is up from just four players in 2007, when Asians made up only 0.4 percent of the league.
One of the most notable Asian-American players in the NFL is Los Angeles Rams linebacker Alec Ogletree, who was born to a Japanese mother and an African-American father. Ogletree is one of only a handful of mixed-race players in the NFL, and his unique background has helped him to become one of the league’s most respected players.
As the number of Asian-American players in the NFL continues to grow, so too does the level of interest in football among Asian-Americans. According to a 2016 report by Nielson, Asians are now the second-most interested group in football, behind only African-Americans.
With its growing popularity among Asians, it is likely that we will see even more Asian-American players in the NFL in years to come.
