As of 2019, there are a total of 323 living members of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Of those, 285 were elected by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA), and the other 38 were either elected by the Veterans Committee or selected as part of the “Today’s Game” era committee.

The Hall of Fame’s Eligibility Rules

Players are eligible for the Hall of Fame if they have played in at least 10 major league seasons, and have been retired for five seasons. (If a player retired before 1943, he must have been retired for one year.) Players become eligible for consideration by the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) voted on by qualified members of the BBWAA. The BBWAA has been charged with electing players since 1936.

In order to be elected, a player must appear on at least 75% of the voters’ ballots. A player can remain on the ballot for up to 10 years as long as he receives at least 5% of the vote. If a player is not elected after 10 years, he can be considered by the Veteran’s Committee every fourth year.

Who Are the Most Recent Additions to the Hall of Fame?
