The average amount of baseballs used in a 9 inning game is between 70 and 75.

On any given day, you can expect a minimum of 60 balls to be used in a nine-inning game, with the potential for many more if there are a lot of hits, home runs, or errors. The official MLB rulebook says that each team is required to have at least six new balls available for use at the start of the game. If necessary, umpires can request additional baseballs from either team’s manager during the game.

There are 30 teams in MLB and each team plays an average of 162 games per season.

That’s a lot of baseballs! In fact, Major League Baseball uses about 1.2 million balls per season. But how many baseballs are used in an average 9-inning game?

The answer is between 70 and 75 balls. Here’s a breakdown of how those balls are used:

-18 balls are used for batting practice

It’s estimated that between 70 and 80 baseballs are used during the course of a nine-inning Major League Baseball game. Most of the balls used are during batting practice before the game, but a significant number are also used during the game itself.

Balls that are hit out of play or foul balls that aren’t retrieved by a ball boy are also replaced with new balls. And, of course, there are always a few balls that end up in the stands as souvenirs for lucky fans.
