There are currently three African American NFL team owners and they are Michael Bidwill of the Arizona Cardinals, Shahid Khan of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Amy Adams Strunk of the Tennessee Titans.
The first African American majority owner in NFL history was Eddie DeBartolo Jr., who owned the San Francisco 49ers from 1977 until 2000.
In 2009, Jeffrey Lurie became the first NFL owner to self-identify as part of a minority group when he announced that he was “part Jewish”.

The NFL was formed in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) before renaming itself the National Football League for the 1922 season. The NFL agreed to merge with the American Football League (AFL) in 1966, and the first Super Bowl was held at the end of that season; the merger was completed in 1970. Robert Kraft is the only black NFL owner who also owns another professional sports team.
In October 2011, Robert Kraft became the first and only black NFL owner who also owns another professional sports team, when he bought a controlling interest in the Boston Globe. He is also the only black NFL owner who was not born into wealth. The other black NFL owners are:
– Shirley Norton – She inherited her husband’s (Edward Norton) stake in the Pittsburgh Steelers when he died in 2008.
– Denise DeBartolo York – She inherited her husband’s (Edward DeBartolo Jr.) stake in the San Francisco 49ers when he died in 2014.
– Jay-Z – He is a minority owner of the New York Jets.
Shahid Khan is the only black NFL owner who was born outside of the United States.
The National Football League has seen a recent influx of black ownership, with Shahid Khan joining the ranks in 2012. He is the only black NFL owner who was born outside of the United States, and he is also the first Muslim owner in the league. Khan was born in Pakistan and moved to the United States when he was 16 to attend college. He is now the owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Other black owners in the NFL include Edward Glazer, who owns the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; Jim Irsay, who owns the Indianapolis Colts; and Edward Debartolo Jr., who used to own the San Francisco 49ers. The Miami Dolphins are also majority owned by Stephen Ross, who is black. Although there are other black majority owners in other professional sports leagues, such as Michael Jordan in basketball and Eminem in baseball, Khan is currently the only black NFL owner.
