Giannis Antetokounmpo is a Greek professional basketball player for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is the eldest of four brothers, all of whom have played professional basketball. The Antetokounmpo brothers are: Thanasis, Kostas, and Alexandros.
Early Life
Giannis Antetokounmpo was born in Athens, Greece, on December 6, 1994, to Nigerian parents Charles and Veronica. The middle child of five brothers, he grew up in the Athens neighborhood of Sepolia. His father was a former professional soccer player who had difficulty finding work when the family first arrived in Greece, while his mother worked as a housekeeper. At one point, the family was so poor they were homeless and resorted to sleeping on parks benches. In an effort to keep his brothers out of trouble and off the streets, Giannis’s father enrolled them in basketball clinics three times a week.
Professional Career
Giannis started playing professional basketball in Greece’s second-tier level (Greek A2 Ethniki) with Filathlitikos, before moving to the first-tier level Greek Basket League (also known as the Hellenic Basketball League), where he played for Alma Trikala and EDGE Athens.
In 2012, he was selected 15th overall in the NBA draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. He made his NBA debut against the Utah Jazz on October 30, 2013. In July 2015, he signed a four-year contract extension with the Bucks. Giannis was selected to play in the Rising Stars Challenge at NBA All-Star Weekend in both 2015 and 2016. In 2016–17, he was named an NBA All-Star for the first time and led the Eastern Conference team in scoring. He was also named to the All-NBA Second Team and Defensive Second Team that season.
Thanasis Antetokounmpo
Giannis Antetokounmpo is a Greek professional basketball player who is currently playing for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is the eldest son of Nigerian immigrants, Charles and Veronica Antetokounmpo, and has two younger brothers, Kostas and Alex.
Professional Career
Thanasis Antetokounmpo made his professional debut in Greece during the 2012–13 season with Filathlitikos. In 29 games, he averaged 4.0 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.
Antetokounmpo joined the New York Knicks’ summer league team in 2013. He was later signed by the Knicks on September 25, 2013. He was assigned to the Knicks’ NBA Development League affiliate, the Erie BayHawks, on November 1. On January 7, 2014, he was recalled by the Knicks.
On February 22, 2015, he was waived by the Knicks after appearing in just 13 games for them during his rookie season. Eight days later, he signed a multi-year deal with Spanish club Baskonia of the Liga ACB and EuroLeague after impressing Baskonia’s management with a tryout.
In July 2016, Antetokounmpo rejoined the Milwaukee Bucks for the 2016 NBA Summer League. On August 1, 2016, he signed a two-year contract with Milwaukee.
Alexandros Antetokounmpo

He is the eldest son of Nigerian immigrants, Charles and Veronica Antetokounmpo. Giannis has two brothers, Thanasis and Kostas, who both play professional basketball.
Professional Career
Alexandros began his professional career with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2013. He was drafted by the Bucks in the second round of the NBA draft with the 49th overall pick. He is the youngest player in NBA history to record a triple double, doing so at age 21. In 2017, he was named the NBA Most Valuable Player. He is a two-time NBA All-Star and has been named to the All-NBA First Team and the All-Defensive First Team.
Francis Antetokounmpo
Francis is the older brother of Giannis Antetokounmpo, who plays for the Milwaukee Bucks. Francis also has two other brothers, Thanasis and Kostas, who both play in the NBA. Giannis and Francis grew up in Greece and started playing basketball at a young age. Giannis is the only brother who is still playing in the NBA.
Professional Career
Francis began his professional career with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2013. He played for the team’s Summer League squad before being assigned to the Canton Charge, the Bucks’ D-League affiliate. In 2014, he was recalled by the Bucks and made his NBA debut on April 17, 2014. He appeared in six games during his rookie season.
The following season, Francis worked his way into the Bucks’ rotation and became a key player off the bench. He appeared in 70 games, averaging 4.3 points and 2.1 rebounds in 11.4 minutes per game.
In 2016, Francis became a regular starter for the Bucks. He appeared in 78 games and averaged 6.2 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.
Francis has continued to develop and improve his game since then. In 2018, he averaged 10.4 points and 5 rebounds per game while shooting 58% from the field and 39% from three-point range.
