The AFC was created after the NFL merged with the American Football League (AFL) in 1970, and currently consists of 16 teams organized into four divisions.
The National Football Conference (NFC)

The AFC has four divisions
The American Football Conference (AFC) is one of the two conferences of the National Football League (NFL), the highest professional level of American football in the world. This conference and its counterpart, the National Football Conference (NFC), currently contain 16 teams each, making up a total of 32 teams in the NFL. Both conferences were created as part of the 1970 merger with the rival American Football League (AFL).
The AFC consists of four divisions: North, East, South, and West. The current divisional alignment was introduced in 2002 after a realignment that happened as a result of adding an expansion team. Since 2002, each time a team has relocated or an expansion team has been added, the AFC has been adjusted so that all four divisions have four teams each.
The most recent change to the AFC came in 2020 when the Houston Texans joined from the NFC.
The AFC East
The AFC East is home to some of the most iconic franchises in the NFL, including the New England Patriots, New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, and Miami Dolphins. These teams have a long history of success and rivalry, making the AFC East one of the most competitive divisions in football.
The AFC East is also one of the most storied divisions in the NFL, with a rich history dating back to the early days of the league. The Patriots, Jets, Bills, and Dolphins have all been members of the AFC East since it was founded in 1970, and each team has won at least one division title.
The Patriots have been the most successful team in the division over the past decade, winning nine division titles and three Super Bowls since 2001. The Jets have also been competitive during that time period, making two AFC Championship appearances. The Bills and Dolphins have struggled more recently, but both teams have a strong fan base and are always a threat to make a run at the playoffs.
The AFC North
The American Football Conference – North (AFC North) is a division of the National Football League’s American Football Conference (AFC). It was created prior to the 2002 NFL season when the league realigned divisions after expanding to 32 teams. The AFC part of the name denotes that it is a division of the American Football Conference.
The AFC North currently consists of four teams: the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, and Pittsburgh Steelers. All four teams are considered to be among the most storied and tradition-rich franchises in league history, with a combined total of 27 Super Bowl appearances (which includes 11 championships), 43 playoff appearances, 10 NFL Championship wins (which includes 3 pre-Super Bowl era titles), and 20 AFL Championship wins (which includes 1 pre-Super Bowl era title). The AFC North is also often referred to as one of football’s “black divisions” due to its high number of African-American players and fans. Geographically, it is also sometimes referred to as the “Midwest Division”.
The AFC South
The American Football Conference – South (AFC South) is one of the four divisions of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). It was created on November 8, 2001, when the NFL realigned by moving the San Diego Chargers and the Kansas City Chiefs from the AFC West to the AFC East and swapping the positions of the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Oilers in the AFC Central. The current AFC South champions are the Houston Texans.
The AFC West
The American Football Conference – Western Division or AFC West is one of the four divisions of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). It was created before the 1970 AFL–NFL merger. In 1970, the AFL’s Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders joined the NFL’s Denver Broncos and Dallas Texans to form the AFC West. The divisional alignment consisted of the eventual Super Bowl V champion Colts, Browns, Steelers, and Bengals.
The NFC has four divisions
Since the NFL went to an 8-division format in 2002, the NFC has been home to the NFC East, NFC North, NFC South, and NFC West. The current 8-division format has each conference divided into 4 divisions of 4 teams each.
The NFC East
The NFC East is made up of the Dallas Cowboys, the New York Giants, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Washington Redskins. These four teams have been in the NFC East since it was created in 1967.
The NFC North
The NFC North is one of the four divisions of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). It was created prior to the 2002 NFL season when the league realigned into eight divisions, four in each conference.
The NFC North is made up of four teams: the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, and Minnesota Vikings. All four teams play their home games in the Central Time Zone.
Since its inception, the NFC North has been one of the most competitive divisions in football. The Packers have won the most division titles with 11, followed by the Bears with nine and the Lions with four. The Vikings have won three division titles, but none since 2009.
The NFC South
The NFC South is one of the four divisions of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). It was created prior to the 2002 NFL season when the league realigned its teams into eight divisions.
The NFC South currently consists of four teams: the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. All four teams are located in the southeastern United States. Since its creation, the NFC South has seen all four of its teams win at least one Super Bowl championship.
The NFC West
The NFC West is made up of the Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco
49ers, and Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks have won the division a total of 10 times, with the 49ers next at 9 times. The Cardinals have only won the division 5 times, with the Rams coming in last at 4 times.
