How Many Games in the Playoffs?
The NHL playoffs are a best-of-seven tournament among the 16 teams that qualify for the playoffs.1 The playoffs begin in April and end in June, with the Stanley Cup Finals held in late May or early June.
First round (best of 7)
In the first round of the playoffs, each series is a best-of-seven. The team that has more points in the regular season will play the team with fewer points. Usually, the team with home ice advantage (higher seed) will get to choose to start the series at home or on the road.
Conference semifinals (best of 7)
The second round of the playoffs is the conference semifinals. This round features the four remaining teams from each conference, who play each other in best-of-seven series to determine which team will advance to the conference finals.
Conference finals (best of 7)
The conference finals are a best-of-seven series played in May between the four surviving teams of the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, two from each conference.
Stanley Cup Final (best of 7)
The Stanley Cup Final is a best-of-seven game series played between the champions of the Eastern and Western Conferences. The team with the better regular season record (or, if tied, the team that earned more standings points) has home-ice advantage in the series.
