How Many Games Left In Baseball?
Contents
With the MLB season winding down, find out how many games are left in baseball and what teams are still in the running for the playoffs.
How the baseball season is structured
The baseball season is broken up into two parts, the regular season and the postseason. The regular season is when each team plays 162 games. These games are spread out over six months, from April to October. The postseason is when the best teams in each division play each other in a tournament. The postseason starts in October and ends in November with the World Series.
The regular season
The regular season of Major League Baseball (MLB) is a 170-game season that runs from late March/early April to late September/early October. Each team plays 162 games, which are broken down into 18 “series” of 9 or 10 games each. The remaining 8 games are played against 2 opponents outside of their division, which rotates each year.
The postseason
The postseason (a.k.a. playoffs) is a single-elimination tournament held after the conclusion of the regular season. The winners of each league’s respective Division Series advance to their league’s Championship Series, and the winners of those advance to the World Series, Major League Baseball’s grand finale.
How many games are in a baseball season?
A baseball season is typically 162 games long, but it can be shorter or longer depending on how many games are postponed or cancelled due to weather or other factors. The longest season on record was in 2011, when the season was 187 days long due to the postponement of games due to the September 11 attacks. The shortest season was in 1892, when the season was only 140 days long.
The regular season
There are 162 games in a regular baseball season. However, there are only so many days in a season, which means that teams have to play multiple games on some days. This can be tough for players, especially since they have to travel from city to city for away games.
The regular season starts in late March or early April and ends in late September or early October. The postseason starts shortly after the end of the regular season and ends in late October or early November.
The postseason
The baseball season is divided into two parts: the regular season and the postseason.
The regular season is when each team plays 162 games. These games are spread out over six months, from late March or early April to late September or early October.
The postseason is when the best teams in each league (the American League and the National League) compete against each other in the playoffs. The playoffs consist of the Wild Card Game, the Division Series, the League Championship Series, and finally, the World Series.
The Wild Card Game is a one-game playoff between the two teams with the best records who did not win their division. The Division Series is a best-of-five series between the division winners. The League Championship Series is a best-of-seven series between the winners of each division series. And finally, the World Series is a best-of-seven series between the champions of each league.
The baseball season ends when one team wins four games in any of these series’. So, in total, there are anywhere from 163 to 188 games played in a baseball season.
How many teams make the playoffs?
In baseball, the playoffs are a best-of-seven series between the two American League and two National League division winners. These division winners are then seeded 1-4 in their respective leagues, with the 1 seed playing the 4 seed and the 2 seed playing the 3 seed in the Division Series. The two winners of the Division Series advance to the best-of-seven League Championship Series. Finally, the winners of the American League Championship Series and National League Championship Series meet in the best-of-seven World Series.
The American League
In the American League, there are three division winners and two wild card teams. The division winners are the three teams with the best record in their respective division, and the two wild card teams are the two teams with the next-best records regardless of division.
The National League
In Major League Baseball, the National League (NL) is one of two leagues that make up the sport, the other being the American League (AL). Founded in 1876 as the National League of Professional Baseball Clubs, it is sometimes called “the Senior Circuit”, while MLB itself is nicknamed “the Major Leagues”.
The NL is divided into two divisions, the East and the West. Each division has three sub-divisions: the Central, which contains four teams; and the North and South, which each contain five teams. The divisional and sub-divisional winners advance to the playoffs, which culminate in the World Series – a best-of-seven championship series between the two league champions.
Since 2019, fifteen teams have competed in the NL: thirteen in the United States and two in Canada.
How the baseball playoff system works
There are a lot of baseball games left in the season. In order to make it to the playoffs, a team must first clinch a spot. There are three ways to clinch a spot in the playoffs: winning the division, winning the wild card, or being the best second-place team. The divisional winner and the wild card team will play each other in a best-of-five series. The winner of that series will advance to the best-of-seven Championship Series.
The American League
In the American League, there are three divisions: the East, the West, and the Central. Each division has five teams. The team with the best record in each division automatically goes to the playoffs. The two other teams that go to the playoffs are the two teams with the next best records in the entire league, regardless of which division they are in. These two teams are called “wild card” teams.
So, if the Yankees have the best record in their division and the Red Sox have the second best record in their league (but not necessarily in their division), both would go to the playoffs. The three division winners and the two wild card teams make up what is called “the field”.
The field of five teams from each league is then narrowed down to four teams total (two from each league) who will play each other in a best-of-five series to see who goes on to play in what is called “the Championship Series”. The two winners of those best-of-seven game series (one from each league) play each other in what is called “the World Series”.
In order for a team to even be eligible for the playoffs, they must first win their division, or else be one of the two wild card teams.
The National League
The National League of Major League Baseball is made up of 15 teams. These teams are further divided into three divisions: the East, the Central, and the West. At the end of the season, the team with the best record in each division automatically earns a spot in the playoffs. In addition, there are two wild-card spots available to any team in the National League that did not win their division but had one of the two best overall records in the league.
So, at minimum, four teams from the National League will make it to the playoffs. But what happens if two or more teams from the same division end up with identical records? In this case, a series of tie-breakers will be used to determine which team(s) get(s) to go to the playoffs.
The first tie-breaker is head-to-head record. This means that if two or more teams have identical records but did not play an equal number of games against each other, then their playoff fate will be determined by looking at how they fared against each other specifically. If they played an equal number of games against each other and still have identical records, then we move on to the next tie-breaker.
The next tie-breaker is divisional record. This means that if two or more teams are tied for a playoff spot and they did not play an equal number of games against teams within their own division, then their playoff fate will be determined by looking at how they fared against teams within their own division specifically. If they played an equal number of games against teams within their own division and still have identical records, then we move on to look at their overall league record.
If two or more teams are tied for a playoff spot and they have identical records against both all opponents and all opponents within their own division, then Major League Baseball looks at a variety of different measures including runs scored and allowed, strength of schedule, and head-to-head record (if applicable) in order to determine which team(s) get(s) to go to the playoffs.
How many games are in the World Series?
The World Series is the annual championship series of Major League Baseball (MLB) and concludes the MLB postseason. It is a best-of-seven playoff and is played between the American League (AL) champion and the National League (NL) champion.
The American League
The World Series is the annual championship series of Major League Baseball (MLB) in North America, played between the American League (AL) champion team and the National League (NL) champion team. The winner of the World Series championship is determined through a best-of-seven playoff, and the winning team is awarded the Commissioner’s Trophy. As the series is played in October, during the autumn season in North America, it is sometimes referred to as the Fall Classic.
Since 1903, when the NL won its first championship, each league has been represented in 44 World Series, with 19 times where both leagues were represented by their pennant winners and 25 times when one or both leagues had a wild card team. The AL has served as the home team for 54 of the Series, designated by a small “Home” label on the game scorecards; NL home field advantage has rotated each year since 1985.
The 105th edition of the World Series will begin on October 22 and end no later than October 30. The Fall Classic will air exclusively on FOX for the 21st straight year.
The National League
There are seven game in the National League Championship.
