The NBA Draft
The regular NBA season is coming to an end, and that can only mean one thing: the NBA draft is upon us. This year’s draft class is loaded with talent, and there are sure to be some future superstars taken in the first round. Let’s take a look at how the draft order stands right now.
When is the NBA Draft?
The 2020 NBA Draft is tentatively scheduled for October 16. The draft was originally supposed to take place on June 25, but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The date is subject to change depending on when the 2019-20 NBA season ends. If the season resumes and is able to finish, the draft would most likely be pushed back to November or December. However, if the season is canceled entirely, the draft could be held as early as August or September.
This year’s draft will be particularly interesting as there is no clear-cut number one overall pick. Players like LaMelo Ball, Anthony Edwards and James Wiseman are all projected to go in the top five, but it remains to be seen who will hear their name called first on draft night.
How many rounds are in the NBA Draft?
The NBA draft is an annual event in which the thirty franchises in the National Basketball Association (NBA) select new players for their rosters. The draft is held in late June, after the end of the NBA regular season, and before the start of the next season. The draft consists of two rounds, with each team having a first-round and second-round pick.
In general, the order of selection is determined by each team’s win-loss record during the previous season. The draft lottery was introduced in 1985 in order to deter teams from tanking (purposefully losing games in order to gain a higher chance at winning the draft lottery and, as a result, receiving a higher draft pick).
Under the current system, 14 teams are given 0.5% odds of winning the first overall pick, while the remaining 16 teams are assigned odds based on their inverse order of regular season record (i.e., 30th pick has 1.8% chance at No. 1 overall pick). After all 14 lottery picks are determined, each non-lottery team will be slotted into their spot in reverse order of regular season record (i.e., last year’s 16th seed will be picking 16th this year).
Who are the most recent NBA Draft picks?
The NBA Draft is an annual event in which the teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA) select players who have either been released by their previous team or have declared themselves eligible for the draft. The draft order is determined by a lottery, which gives the teams with the worst records in the previous season the best chance of winning the first pick.
The most recent NBA Draft was held on June 20th, 2018. The following players were selected in that draft:
1. Deandre Ayton (Phoenix Suns)
2. Marvin Bagley III (Sacramento Kings)
3. Luka Doncic (Dallas Mavericks)
