How Many Games Until the NBA Finals?

Introduction

The NBA Finals is the annual championship series of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Eastern and Western conference champions play a best-of-seven game series to determine the league champion. The winning team of the series receives the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy.

The Finals was first held in 1947, four years after the NBA’s inception. Since 1985, it has been played between June and July, typically during the last two weeks of June, or the first week of July. Most often, one team has had home court advantage in the series (hosting four out of seven games), as was the case in 1985, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1993, 2005, 2007 and 2009. Other times both teams have had home court advantage (such as in 1986), or neither team has had it (such as in 1988 and 1990).

The Process

Once the NBA playoffs start, 16 teams remain in the running for the NBA championship. The seven teams with the best record in their respective conferences (Eastern and Western) are seeded first through seventh and given a first-round bye. The other nine teams are seeded eighth through sixteenth and must win a best-of-seven series against one of the top seven seeds to advance.

The second round of the playoffs (the conference semifinals) features the eight remaining teams in each conference, with the matchups determined by seeding. The conference semifinals are also best-of-seven series.

The conference finals feature the final four teams in each conference and follow the same format as the conference semifinals.

Finally, the NBA Finals match up the winners of the Eastern Conference Finals and Western Conference Finals in a best-of-seven series.

The Numbers

In order to make the NBA Finals, teams have to first make it through the regular season and then four rounds of playoffs. The first round of the playoffs is a best-of-seven series, meaning that the first team to win four games moves on to the next round. From there, the conference semifinals and conference finals are both best-of-seven series. Finally, the NBA Finals are also a best-of-seven series.

So, how many games does a team have to win in order to make it to the NBA Finals? A team has to win a total of 11 games in order to make it to the NBA Finals. This includes four games in the first round of the playoffs, four games in either the conference semifinals or conference finals, and finally three games in the NBA Finals.

The Outcome

The NBA Finals is the championship series of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Eastern and Western conference champions play a best-of-seven game series to determine the league champion. The winning team of the series receives the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy.
