Madden NFL is a football video game series developed by EA Tiburon for EA Sports. It is named after Pro Football Hall of Famer John Madden, and has sold more than 130 million copies, as of May 2019. A new game comes out every year, with the latest installment being Madden NFL 20.
As of December 2016, there had been 24 Madden NFL games released for home consoles since 1988, not including mobile and portable versions. The first was John Madden Football, followed by its 1992 sequel, John Madden Football II. The next sixteen were simply titled Madden NFL (omitting the Roman numeral “X”), starting with Madden NFL ’93 and ending with Madden NFL 10. The 2010 game was simply titled “Madden NFL 11”. From 2012 to 2016 inclusive, the games were again simply titled “Madden NFL”, followed by the year (e.g., “Madden NFL 12”); this was done to avoid having to update the logo every year. In 2017, the franchise returned to using numerical titling (in this case “Madden 18”), this time using Arabic numerals in line with the game’s new engine which displayed players’ faces more realistically—this engine had internally been in development since 2015 under the codename “Infinity”.
