Introduction

The 2019-20 NBA season was put on hold in March due to the outbreak of COVID-19. The season resumed in July with a shortened schedule and all games being played at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida.

All players were tested for COVID-19 before entering the bubble and were required to wear masks and maintain social distancing when not playing. Despite these measures, a total of 16 players tested positive for the virus during the season.

Since the start of the NBA’s 2019-20 season, a total of 21 players have tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

Of those 21 cases, 17 have come since the league restarted its season in late July at Walt Disney World near Orlando, Florida. All but one of those 17 positive tests occurred during training camp; the other came during the regular season.

Just four players tested positive prior to the league’s shutdown in March due to the pandemic.

Two players have confirmed they contracted COVID-19 while not with their teams: Houston Rockets guard Austin Rivers and Washington Wizards forward Davis Bertans.

Rivers said he caught the virus while working out in Los Angeles in early July; Bertans says he contracted it while vacationing in Latvia later that month.

As of August 24, 2020, 22 NBA players have tested positive for COVID-19, out of 502 total tests administered since the league began its intake testing period on June 23. Of the 22 confirmed positives, 12 came from players on the Brooklyn Nets roster.
