Boston Celtics
The Boston Celtics are an American professional basketball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. The Celtics compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Atlantic Division. Founded in 1946 as one of the league’s original eight teams, the team play their home games at TD Garden, which they share with the National Hockey League (NHL)’s Boston Bruins. The Celtics are one of the most successful teams in NBA history; as of 2019, they have won 21 conference championships, four conference titles, and 17 division championships. They have played in 52 NBA Finals, winning nine of them.
Franchise history:
The Celtics formed in 1946 with Mystics landing Chuck Cooper and Ed Macauley being acquired in a trade with St. Louis Bombers. In 1950, the Celtics signed Bill Russell fresh out of college and he went on to become one of the greatest players in NBA history. With him leading the way, they suffered only their second losing season in franchise history in his rookie year but then proceeded to win an incredible 11 championships over his 13-year career. Another player who made his name during this period was Bob Cousy who was given the nickname “Houdini of the Hardwood” for his spectacular ball-handling skills.
New York Knicks
The New York Knicks are one of the original eight NBA teams. The Knicks play their home games at Madison Square Garden in New York City, and are currently coached by David Fizdale. The team has won two NBA championships (1970 and 1973), and is one of only two teams (along with the Los Angeles Lakers) to win multiple championships while located in New York City.
Philadelphia 76ers
The Philadelphia 76ers are a professional basketball team based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The 76ers play their home games at Wells Fargo Center.
The franchise was founded in 1946 as the Syracuse Nationals, one of the charter members of the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The Nationals moved to Philadelphia in 1963 and changed their name to the Philadelphia 76ers. Wilt Chamberlain joined the team in 1965, and the team won its first NBA Championship in 1967, led by Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Billy Cunningham, and head coach Alex Hannum. They repeated as champions in 1968. In 1974, under new head coach Chuck Daly, they traded for center Moses Malone, who led them to a third title victory against the Los Angeles Lakers in 1983 with cheesesteak sandwiches served at halftime. The 76ers have only been back to the NBA Finals once since then: in 2001 Gordon Igesund coached Allen Iverson-led Sixers lost to Shaquille O’Neal’s Los Angeles Lakers four games to one.
In recent years, rebuilds initiated by former general manager Sam Hinkie resulted in the Sixers winning fewer games than any other team during that span. Hinkie’s “Process” turned into one of historic losing proportions; between 2013–14 and 2016–17 seasons inclusive, they lost more games than any other team ever had over any four-year span since basketball was invented. However, after hiring Jerry Colangelo as chairman of basketball operations and general manager Bryan Colangelo as Hinkie’s replacement in April 2016, led by Rookie of the Year Award winner Ben Simmons and All-Star Joel Embiid playing their first full seasons together in 2017–18, the Sixers returned to playoff contention clinching their first playoff berth since 2012 on April 6th 2018. They were ultimately swept by eventual Eastern Conference champions Boston Celtics 4 games to 0 during their opening round playoff series despite Embiid averaging 22 points per game during it prior to suffering an abdominal injury that sidelined him for rest of postseason run; his absence was considered a major factor for Sixers’ lackluster performance without him on court as they failed to make it past opening round for second consecutive year following similar outcome against Miami Heat during previous season’s playoffs despite leading that series 2 games to 1 with homecourt advantage before he was again sidelined after Game 3 due to knee injury which forced him to miss rest of series resulting Sixers losing it 4 games to 1.
