The team plays its home games at the American Airlines Center, which it shares with the National Hockey League’s Dallas Stars.

The Mavericks were founded in 1980 as an expansion team, and won three division titles during the 1980s and 1990s. In 2000, they defeated the Miami Heat in six games to win their first NBA championship. They followed that success with a second title in 2011 by defeating the Miami Heat again, this time in seven games. They repeat as champions in 2012 by defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder for their first ever back-to-back championships. They own two franchise records: 37 consecutive playoff appearances (1984–2021—the longest active streak; tied with Philadelphia 76ers) and 26 straight seasons with 50 or more wins (1987–88 to 2012–13). As of 2021, according to Forbes, they are the eighth most valuable basketball franchise in the United States, valued at $2.4 billion.
