The Bears have won nine NFL championships. The first came in 1921, when the Bears beat the New York Giants in the NFL’s inaugural championship game. George Halas, the team’s founder, was the head coach. The Bears won again in 1932, ’33, ’40, ’41, ’42, ’43, ’46 and ’63.
Pre-Super Bowl era
The National Football League (NFL) was founded in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) with ten teams from four states, all of whom existed in some form as participants of regional leagues in their respective territories. The Chicago Bears are a charter member of the APFA. In the APFA’s inaugural season, only Chicago and Rock Island had more than 500 people at their games, so they played each other twice. Since the creation of the Super Bowl in 1967, the Bears have appeared in two Super Bowls, winning both. They defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XX 46-10. This game was notable not only for the lopsided score, but also for Bear’s linebacker Otis Wilson becoming the first player to return two interceptions for touchdowns in a Super Bowl. The Bears again defeated the Patriots in Super bowl XLI 29-17. In this game, quarterback Rex Grossman became the first Chicago Bear to throw for a touchdown in a Super Bowl.
