This season, a total of eight NFL coaches were fired. Of those eight, five were fired during the regular season and three were fired after the season ended.

Since the start of the 2015 NFL season, a total of 23 head coaches have been fired. This includes coaching changes made during the season as well as those made after the season ended.

How Many NFL Coaches Have Been Fired in the Last 10 Seasons?
In the last 10 NFL seasons, an average of 4.6 head coaches have been fired each year, with a low of 2 in 2009 and 2010 and a high of 8 in both 2006 and 2016. In 2017, 5 head coaches were fired, which was slightly above the 10-year average. The 2018 NFL season saw 7 head coaches get fired, which tied the record for most coaching changes in a single season.
How Many NFL Coaches Have Been Fired in the Last 20 Seasons?
In the last 20 seasons, 61 NFL coaches have been fired during or after the season. That is an average of 3.05 per year.
In 2017, 9 NFL coaches were fired. This was the most coaches fired in a single season since 2013, when 11 coaches were given the pink slip. InComparison, in 2016 only 5 coaches were fired and in 2015 only 2 were let go.
Of the 61 coaches who have been fired over the last 20 years, 22 were let go during the season and 39 were relieved of their duties after the season had ended.
How Many NFL Coaches Have Been Fired in the Last 30 Seasons?
Since 1990, ninety NFL coaches have been fired during or after the season. That’s an average of three coaches per year, and it doesn’t include interim coaches who took over for a fired coach mid-season.
The 2020 season saw six NFL coaches get fired, the most in a single season since 2013. Bill O’Brien of the Houston Texans was the first to go, followed by Adam Gase of the New York Jets, Matt Patricia of the Detroit Lions, Mike McCarthy of the Dallas Cowboys, Ron Rivera of the Washington Redskins, and Doug Marrone of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Of those six coaches, only Marrone had a winning record (he was also interim coach for two games in 2016 after Gus Bradley was fired). Gase and Rivera were both fired with three games remaining in their seasons, while O’Brien, Patricia and McCarthy were all let go after Week 4.
So far, two coaching vacancies have been filled: David Culley by the Texans and Dan Campbell by the Lions. The Jets, Cowboys and Redskins are still searching for their next head coach.
