NFL Playoff Basics

How many teams make the playoffs?

The National Football League (NFL) playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the regular season to determine the NFL champion. Each year, six teams from each of the league’s two conferences qualify for the tournament. The four division winners in each conference are seeded 1–4 based on their overall won-lost-tied record, and the two wild-card teams are seeded 5 and 6. The playoffs begin with four wild-card round games, played on the weekend immediately following the final regular season weekend (i.e., either Saturday/Sunday or Sunday/Monday). The four winners advance to meet the 1–4 seeds in their respective conferences in the divisional round games, played on the weekend immediately following the wild-card weekend (either Saturday/Sunday or Sunday/Monday). In turn, those winners advance to meet each other in the conference championship games (played on Sunday), with those winners advancing to Super Bowl LIII, to be played on Sunday, February 3, 2019 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

Under a system implemented for the 2018 season and continuing through at least 2021, if one or more teams from a given seed line are unable to play due to being affected by COVID-19 positive tests or contact tracing protocols established by either the league or state/local public health authorities, additional teams will “slide up” from lower seed lines to fill any resulting openings in playoff brackets.

What is the playoff format?

The NFL playoff format is a single-elimination tournament held after the end of the regular season. The tournament culminates in the Super Bowl, the league’s championship game.

Only seven teams from each conference (14 total) qualify for the playoffs. Each conference’s bracket is seeded based on each team’s record. The four division winners are automatically seeded 1-4 (based on record), while the four wild card teams are seeded 5-8 (also based on record).

In the first round, the division winner with the best record in each conference hosts the wild card team with the worst record. The other two first-round matchups pit the remaining division winner against the remaining wild card team in each conference. In the second round, known as the divisional playoffs, the higher seed hosts each game. Conference seeding determines which team would host in case of a rematch from earlier in the season.
