The franchise is legally and corporately registered as New York Jets, LLC.

The team was founded in 1959 as the Titans of New York, an original member of the American Football League (AFL); later, the franchise joined the NFL in the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. The team began to play in 1960 at the Polo Grounds. Under new ownership, the current name was adopted in 1963 and the franchise moved to Shea Stadium in 1964 and then to Giants Stadium in 1984. The team qualified to play in the AFC playoffs for the first time in 1968 and went on to compete in Super Bowl III where they defeated the Baltimore Colts, becoming the first AFL team to defeat an NFL club in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game. Since 1968, they have appeared in 14 divisional playoff games and seven AFC Championship Games—winning six division titles overall (1968, 1969 [both as AFL Eastern Division Champions], 1998, 2002 [both as AFC East Champions], 2009). However, they have never returned to nor won a Super Bowl since their sole win back 1968. Throughout their history, they have had intense rivalries with their AFC East counterparts Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins; as well as their cross-town rivals; first with their fellow original AFL clubs—the Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders—and currently with their former defensive coordinator turned head coach Rex Ryan’s Buffalo Bills from 2009 onward due to Ryan’s six-year tenure with them from 2009 to 2014 which included four consecutive AFC Championship game appearances from 2009-2012 where he led them to back-to-back AFC Championships wins for 2010 & 2011—earning him his only two career head coaching AFC Championship game victories; making him 2–4 all time for his career thus far which includes his head coaching appearances for those four straight years where he has accumulated losses against his former employer Indianapolis Colts & Peyton Manning during that time (2009 & 2010 seasons respectively) & also losing twice more against them during his time with Buffalo Bills (2014 season).

During their time at Giants Stadium and MetLife Stadium combined, they reached one Super Bowl (XIII), winning that game during their 1968 season while representing Shea Stadium; they were led by head coach Weeb Ewbank and professional footballer Joe Namath—whose guarantee of a victory helped engineer what has been considered one of professional sports’ greatest upsets—and won 16–7 against NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle’s favored Baltimore Colts (which had posted a 13–1 regular-season record).

The team began to play at Shea Stadium in 1964 and then moved to Giants Stadium in 1984.Four years later, following Super Bowl XXI, Parcells left abruptly to return to coaching the New England Patriots; he was succeeded by his offensive coordinator Bill Belichick—the only coach Parcells ever recommended Ewbank hire. Belichick’s tenure with the Jets extended through 2000, when he was dismissed one day after owner Woody Johnson announced his intention to hire then-University of Oklahoma head coach Howard Schnellenberger as general manager.

Schnellenberger was replaced by Herman Edwards, who compiled a 40–41 record over five seasons before being fired after missing the playoffs following two consecutive 8–8 seasons—in part due to controversial decisions made during each offseason by general manager Terry Bradway. Edwards was replaced by Eric Mangini, who led the team to back-to-back 10–6 seasons—missing out on the playoffs both times due to tiebreakers—before being fired following a 4–12 campaign in 2008. Mangini was succeeded by Rex Ryan, who compiled a record of 46–50 (including four trips to the AFC Championship Game) over six seasons with significant player personnel changes during each offseason from 2009 through 2014; this led former general manager Mike Tannenbaum to be relieved of his duties after six seasons with one year remaining on his contract following consecutive non-playoff seasons in 2012 and 2013; soon thereafter Ryan himself would be relieved of his duties after four non-playoff seasons from 2015 through 2018 that included an 18-game losing streak that spanned nearly two full calendar years between late 2014 and early 2016 which is still currently ongoing as of December 30th 2018 making it not only currently active but also also currently tied for 2nd longest all time with another streak set by Tampa Bay which ended earlier this very same day on December 30th 2018; Bradway once again served as interim GM for several weeks following Tannenbaum’s firing before being replaced on an indefinite basis by Christopher Johnson— brother of Woody Johnson—on January 13th 2019 which remains ongoing as of this very moment.

The Giants were one of five teams that joined the NFL in 1925, and is one of only two of that group still existing, along with the Chicago Bears. The team ranks third among all NFL franchises with eight NFL titles: four in the pre–Super Bowl era (1927, 1934, 1938, 1956) and four since the advent of the Super Bowl (1986, 1990, 2007, 2011), along with more championship appearances than any other team in NFL history, with 19 overall appearances. Their championship tally is surpassed only by the Green Bay Packers (13) and Chicago Bears (9). Throughout their history, the Giants have featured 28 Hall of Fame players, including NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP) award winners Mel Hein, Frank Gifford, Y. A. Tittle, and Lawrence Taylor.

The New York Jets and the New York Giants

New York is home to two NFL teams, the Jets and the Giants. Both teams play their home games in New Jersey. The Jets are in the AFC East division, while the Giants are in the NFC East division. New York is the only state with two NFL teams.

Rivalry

The New York Jets and the New York Giants are two of the most popular NFL teams in the country. Both teams have a rich history and are well-known for their fierce rivalry. The Jets and the Giants first played each other in 1969, and since then, they have faced off against each other numerous times. In fact, the Jets and the Giants have played each other more than any other two NFL teams.

The Jets and the Giants both play their home games at MetLife Stadium, which is located in East Rutherford, New Jersey. However, despite playing in the same state, the Jets and the Giants are actually considered to be rivals. This is because they both represent different cities in different states. The Jets represent New York City, while the Giants represent New York State.

Despite their rivalry, the Jets and the Giants actually have a lot in common. For starters, they are both considered to be “original eight” franchises of the NFL. Additionally, they are both owned by the same person, Woody Johnson. Furthermore, they have both won Super Bowls (the Jets in 1968 and the Giants in 1986).

Despite their similarities, there are also many differences between these two teams. Perhaps the most notable difference is that the Jets have never won a Super Bowl, while the Giants have won four Super Bowls (1986, 1990, 2007, 2011). Additionally, while both teams play their home games at MetLife Stadium, only the Giants actually call it their home stadium (the Jets share it with them).

Shared Stadium

The New York Jets and the New York Giants are the only two NFL teams that share a stadium. They play their home games at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
