How Many NFL Teams Need a Head Coach?

Introduction

In the National Football League (NFL), there are 32 teams. Of those, only two teams currently don’t have a head coach. They are the Cincinnati Bengals and the Miami Dolphins.

NFL Teams that Need a Head Coach

As of right now, there are eight NFL teams that are in need of a head coach. These teams are the Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts, New York Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Washington Redskins.

Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals are in search of a new head coach after firing Steve Wilks following just one season. It was a forgettable 3-13 campaign in which Arizona ranked near the bottom of the league in both points scored and points allowed. The Cardinals have a talented young quarterback in Josh Rosen, but they need to surrounded him with more talent on both sides of the ball if they’re going to turn things around quickly.

Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers are one of the teams that need a head coach. Green Bay has not had a head coach since Mike McCarthy was fired during the 2018 season. The Packers are currently in the process of interviewing candidates for their head coaching position.

Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts are a professional American football team based in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Colts compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) South division. Since the 2008 season, the Colts have played their home games in Lucas Oil Stadium. Previously, the team had been based in Baltimore, Maryland, and Memorial Stadium.

New York Jets

The New York Jets are a professional American football team based in the New York metropolitan area. The Jets compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The team is headquartered in Florham Park, New Jersey. In a unique arrangement for the league, the Jets share MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey with the New York Giants. The franchise is legally and corporately registered as New York Jets, LLC.

The team was founded in 1959 as the Titans of New York, an original member of the American Football League (AFL); later, the franchise joined the NFL in the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. The team began to play at Shea Stadium upon its opening in 1964; it replaced Polo Grounds as their home field until 1984 when they moved to Giants Stadium (renamed MetLife Stadium in 2011). Eight years later, following successful seasons led by quarterback Joe Namath with head coaches Weeb Ewbank and Walt Michaels, potential owner Marvin Warner declined to purchase the team due to waning fan support and stadium issues. Nevertheless, Gothamfolder acquiresthe team in 1963 but had trouble finding suitable field space to lease or purchase outright—resulting in playing most of their home games at Shea Stadium again—until 1970 when they finally moved into Giants Stadium after purchasing it outright from Warner Bros.-Seven Arts Productions who retained Warner Communications title as they merged with National Kinney Corporation two years later.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers – The Buccaneers fired head coach Dirk Koetter after he posted a 19-29 record over three seasons. Tampa Bay had high hopes entering the 2018 season but finished 5-11.

Conclusion

All in all, it’s safe to say that half of the NFL’s teams will be looking for a new head coach this offseason. With so many coaching vacancies, it will be interesting to see how the league’s landscape changes over the next few months.
