How Many NFL Teams Play on Grass?

It’s a question we get asked a lot here at FieldTurf: how many NFL teams play on grass?
The answer, as of the 2017 season, is 10.

There are 32 NFL teams.

Of the 32 NFL teams, only one teamplays its home games on artificial turf. The Minnesota Vikings upgraded to artificial turf in 2016, joining the New England Patriots as the only teams in the NFL to play their home games on FieldTurf. All other 30 NFL teams play their home games on natural grass.

Of those 32 teams, 20 play their home games on grass.

Most of the teams that have made recent Super Bowls have been playing on grass. In the last 10 years, only three of the 20 teams in the big game have not been playing on grass.

The majority of NFL teams play their home games on natural grass surfaces, while a minority of teams play on artificial turf. There are a variety of reasons why teams choose to play on one surface over the other, but the main factor is usually climate.

Grass surfaces are more common in cooler climates where the growing season is long enough to support a healthy turf. In warmer climates, it can be more difficult to maintain a grass surface in good condition due to the increased risk of disease and wear-and-tear from extended use.

Artificial turf surfaces were first installed in 1966 and have become increasingly popular in recent years. Many newer stadiums have installed artificial turf because it is more durable and requires less maintenance than natural grass. Additionally, artificial turf can be used in all weather conditions and does not need to be replaced as often as natural grass.

Some players prefer to play on artificial turf because it is a faster surface that allows for quicker movements. However, other players find that artificial turf is harder on their bodies and can cause more injuries than playing on grass.

The decision of which surface to play on is ultimately up to each individual team, and there are pros and cons to both options.

The other 12 teams play their home games on artificial turf.

Of the 32 teams in the NFL, 20 play their home games on grass. The other 12 teams play their home games on artificial turf. The New York Giants and New York Jets share a stadium, so both teams play on grass.

There are also two teams who play their home games on a hybrid surface of grass and artificial turf.

Out of the 32 NFL teams, 20 play their home games on natural grass, while eight have switched to artificial turf. There are also two teams who play their home games on a hybrid surface of grass and artificial turf.

The two teams who play their home games on a hybrid surface are the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks.

As of the 2019 season, there are two NFL teams who play their home games on a surface that is not 100% grass. The New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks both have fields that are a hybrid of grass and artificial turf. This is done in order to prevent the wear and tear that would come from having a full grass field, as well as to provide a better playing surface for the athletes.
