With three brothers in the NBA, the Ball family has become a basketball dynasty. But how many of the Ball brothers are actually in the NBA?
The Ball Brothers
There are three Ball brothers, all of whom have played professional basketball. The oldest is Lonzo, who was drafted second overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2017 NBA draft. The middle child, LiAngelo, was a star high school player who was committed to UCLA before being caught shoplifting in China and leaving the school. The youngest, LaMelo, is currently playing high school basketball and is also committed to UCLA.
Lonzo Ball
All of the Ball brothers have played basketball at some point in their lives. Lonzo is the oldest of the three, and he was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2017. He played one season for the Lakers before being traded to the New Orleans Pelicans in 2019. Ball has two younger brothers, LiAngelo and LaMelo. Both brothers have played professional basketball overseas.
LiAngelo Ball
LiAngelo Ball is an American basketball player who was born on November 24, 1998, in Anaheim, California. He is the middle child of LaVar and Tina Ball. LiAngelo played high school basketball for Chino Hills High School and was a standout player on the school’s 2015–16 team that finished the season undefeated and won the state championship. He then committed to playing college basketball for UCLA.
In December 2017, Liangelo and two of his teammates were arrested in China for shoplifting from a Louis Vuitton store. The three players were released on bail and returned to the United States, where they were suspended from the UCLA basketball team indefinitely. After a short stint with a professional team in Lithuania, Liangelo returned to the United States and joined his father’s junior basketball league, the Junior Basketball Association (JBA).
LaMelo Ball
LaMelo Ball is an American professional basketball player for the Charlotte Hornets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was drafted with the third overall pick by the Hornets in the 2020 NBA draft. He played college basketball for one season with the Illawarra Hawks of the National Basketball League (NBL), before he was drafted.
The NBA
All of the Ball brothers have committed to playing basketball for a Division I college. Lonzo Ball, the eldest of the Ball brothers, was the second overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Lakers.
Lonzo Ball
Lonzo Ball (born October 27, 1997) is an American professional basketball player for the New Orleans Pelicans of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for one season with the UCLA Bruins, earning first-team All- Pac-12 honors before declaring for the NBA draft. Ball was selected with the second overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Lakers.
LiAngelo Ball
LiAngelo Ball (born November 24, 1998) is an American professional basketball player for the Ohio BallERS of The Basketball League (TBL). He played college basketball for one season with the UCLA Bruins. Ball was released by the Ballers on February 12, 2019.
LaMelo Ball
LaMelo Ball (born August 22, 2001) is an American professional basketball player for the Charlotte Hornets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was born in Anaheim, California, to LaVar and Tina Ball. He has two older brothers, Lonzo and LiAngelo; all three were standout high school basketball players. LaVar played college football at Washington State and was drafted by the New York Jets in the 1987 NFL Draft, but did not make it past training camp. Lonzo played one year of college basketball for UCLA before being drafted second overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2017 NBA draft. LiAngelo was briefly committed to playing college basketball for UCLA, but later decided to pursue a professional career overseas.
LaMelo began his high school career at Chino Hills High School in his hometown of Chino Hills, California. As a freshman in 2016–17, he helped lead the team to a 35–0 record and a state championship. He averaged 28.8 points, 8.5 rebounds, 7.7 assists, and 2.6 steals per game that season en route to being named a McDonald’s All-American as well as Mr. Basketball USA. As a sophomore in 2017–18, he averaged 27.4 points per game while leading Chino Hills to another state championship and a 32–1 record.
Ball entered his junior year of high school as one of the most highly touted prospects in his class; he was ranked as high as second overall on some prospect lists. On October 31, 2018, Ball scored 92 points in a 146–123 victory over Los Osos High School; it was the seventh-highest single-game total in California high school history at the time (since surpassed by Marvin Bagley III’s 100-point performance on January 10, 2018). He averaged 36.8 points per game during his junior season and was once again named Mr. Basketball USA after leading Chino Hills to its third consecutive state championship and undefeated record (30–4).
On December 20 Ball signed with agent Harrison Gaines and ended his amateur career; he subsequently announced that he would be making himself eligible for the 2020 NBA draft instead of attending college or playing overseas professionally like his brothers had done previously
