How Many NFL Players Are on the Roster?

There is no one definitive answer to how many NFL players are on a roster because it can fluctuate based on a number of factors.

53 players on the active roster

At the start of the regular season, each of the 32 NFL teams must have a roster that consists of 53 players. These 53 players come from a pool of eligible players that signed contracts with the team during the offseason.

During the season, teams are allowed to make unlimited substitutions, so long as they do not exceed the 53-player limit. If a team wants to add a player to their roster, they must release or trade another player first.

45 players on the practice squad

there are 45 players on the practice squad, but only 53 on the active roster. The practice squad allows for more player development and gives teams an opportunity to scout new talent.

8 players on the Injured Reserve list

There are a total of 8 NFL players on the Injured Reserve list. These players are not eligible to play for the remainder of the season, but they can be activated beginning the day after the Super Bowl.
