How Many Open Tennis Tournaments Are There?

Introduction

There are four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, also known as the Majors-the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. These events are held annually and attract the world’s top tennis players. In addition to the four Majors, there are also many other professional tennis tournaments held throughout the year that are categorized by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).

The Four Grand Slam Tournaments

The Four Grand Slam tournaments, also called majors, are the most important annual tennis events. They offer the most ranking points, prize money, public and media attention, the greatest strength and size of field, and greater number of “best of” sets for men. The Grand Slam itinerary consists of the Australian Open in mid January, the French Open in May and June, Wimbledon in June and July, and the US Open in August and September. Each tournament is played over a two-week period.

The Masters 1000

The Masters 1000 (previously known as the ATP Championship Series, Single Week, ATP Mercedes-Benz Super 9, and ATP Masters Series) is a group of nine tournaments that form the second-highest echelon in men’s tennis. The series is administered by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and is incorporated into the ATP Tour. The events are held annually in Europe, North America and Asia. Each event has a total prize fund of over US$2 million.

The nine tournaments are:

1. Indian Wells Masters
2. Miami Open
3. Monte-Carlo Masters
4. Madrid Open
5. Rome Masters
6. Canadian Open
7. Cincinnati Masters
8. Shanghai Masters
9. Paris Masters

The ATP 500

The ATP 500 is a series of men’s tennis tournaments held around the world that are part of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour. The ATP 500 series includes 13 tournaments, with each tournament awarding 500 ranking points to the winner. The tournaments are important events on the ATP Tour and attract many of the top players in men’s tennis.

The ATP 250

The ATP 250 is a category of tennis tournament for men. It is the second-highest tier of regular men’s tennis tournaments after the ATP World Tour Masters 1000. Below the ATP 250 are the ATP Challenger Tour and the ITF Futures tournaments. The ATP 250 series includes 40 tournaments, with most of them taking place in Europe, North America, and Asia.

The Challenger Tour

The Challenger Tour is the second-highest level of men’s professional tennis. It is organized by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and is a tier below the ATP Tour. The Challenger Tour offers prize money ranging from $50,000 up to $162,480, which is more than double the amount offered on the ATP Futures Circuit.

The ITF Pro Circuit

The ITF Pro Circuit offers the opportunity for players to compete in professional tennis tournaments and earn Official World Ranking points. Tournaments are grouped by gender (men’s, women’s, or mixed doubles), surface (hard court, clay court, or grass court), and size (number of players).

In 2019, there are 717 men’s tournaments, 572 women’s tournaments, and 177 mixed doubles tournaments on the ITF Pro Circuit. Of these, 188 are hard court events, 315 are clay court events, and 214 are grass court events. There are also 47 combined men’s and women’s events.
