The NBA draft is an annual event in which the 30 teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA) select players who are eligible to play in the league. The draft lottery takes place in May, before the draft itself, and is used to determine the order of selection for the 14 non-playoff teams. The draft itself is held in June.
In previous years, the draft consisted of two rounds, but this was changed to three rounds in 1989. In 2004, it was changed back to two rounds. In 2019, it will once again be three rounds.
The first round of the draft consists of 30 picks, with each team having one pick. The second round consists of 29 picks (the Phoenix Suns do not have a second-round pick), and the third round has 28 picks (the Cleveland Cavaliers and Portland Trail Blazers do not have third-round picks).
Players who are drafted can either choose to enter the NBA immediately or choose to play college basketball for one year before entering the NBA draft again.
