Eastern Conference
The Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL) is made up of 16 teams, eight from Canada and eight from the United States. The conference is split into two divisions, the Atlantic and the Metropolitan.

Western Conference
The Western Conference is one of two conferences in the National Hockey League (NHL). Its counterpart is the Eastern Conference. Previously known as the Clarence Campbell Conference, it was renamed in 1993 to reflect the geographical locations of the teams. There are currently 15 teams in the Western Conference: 8 in Canada and 7 in the United States. The conference was created in 1926 when six teams from Canada and the United States split off from theEast to form their own league; this new league was called the Western Hockey League (WHL). The WHL only lasted for 11 seasons before folding; however, five of its teams joined the NHL: The Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Maroons, and New York Rangers. In 1967, six more expansion teams were added to the NHL, including two more from Canada (the Los Angeles Kings and Minnesota North Stars) and four more from the United States (the Oakland Seals, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, and St. Louis Blues). This brought the total number of teams in the NHL to 12. In 1970-71, another wave of expansion took place with four additional franchises joinining: The Buffalo Sabres and Vancouver Canucks from Canada as well as

The NHL is considered to be the premier professional ice hockey league in the world, and one of the major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada.
Forwards
Forwards are the most numerous players on an NHL roster, and they come in all shapes and sizes. As with any sport, each position has its own unique skill set. But in general, forwards are responsible for scoring goals and generating offense.
There are three main types of forwards: centers, wingers, and power forwards. Each has a different role to play on the ice, and each requires a different set of skills.
Centers are often considered the quarterbacks of hockey, responsible for both setting up plays and finishing them off. They typically skate in the middle of the ice, making them well-suited to take advantage of open lanes and create space for their teammates.
Wingers are usually the fastest players on the team, with the ability to fly up and down the ice in a hurry. They typically line up on either side of the center, providing support on both offense and defense.
Power forwards are a hybrid of sorts, combining the speed and skill of a winger with the physicality and strength of a defenseman. They’re often among the heaviest players on the team, using their size to win puck battles and create space for their teammates.
Defensemen
There are typically six defensemen on an NHL team, but the number can vary depending on the team’s strategy. For example, some teams may choose to have seven defensemen, while others may go with five. The most common configuration is six defensemen.
The designated roles of defensemen are to defend against the opposition’s forwards and prevent them from scoring. Defensemen also help out their own team’s forwards by clearing the puck out of the defensive zone and making good passes up the ice. In recent years, defensemen have also been expected to contribute offensively and many of them are now among the leading scorers on their teams.
Goaltenders
There are three types of players in ice hockey, forwards, defensemen, and goaltenders. Goaltenders are the last line of defense and are responsible for stopping the puck from entering the net. They wear special equipment that is designed to protect them from the high-speed collisions that can occur in hockey.
The number of goaltenders on an NHL team varies depending on the league regulations. In the NHL, each team is allowed to dress two goaltenders for each game. One goaltender starts the game and is responsible for playing the entire game, unless he is injured or removed for performance reasons. The other goaltender is considered the backup and only enters the game if the starter is injured or removed.

Regular Season
In a typical NHL season, each team plays 82 games. From those games, they accumulate points based on their results.
There are three possible results in each game: a win, a loss, or overtime/shootout loss (OTL/SOL). A win is worth two points, a loss is worth zero points, and an OTL/SOL is worth one point.
At the end of the regular season, the team with the most points in each conference is crowned that conference’s champion.
The sixteen teams with the most points in the league – regardless of conference – qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Playoffs

In the playoffs, each team plays a best-of-seven series. The team that wins four games wins the series.
The first two rounds of the playoffs are “conference-based”. The two conference champions (the team with the best regular-season record in each conference) receive a “bye” to the conference finals.
