Free Agents

At the end of every season, teams can release players from their contracts, making them free agents. Any team in the league can then sign them to a new contract. There are two types of free agents: unrestricted and restricted.

Unrestricted

Unrestricted free agents are free to sign with any team, without restriction, starting on July 1 each year. If a player signs an offer sheet with another team, his current team has three days to match the offer and keep the player. If the current team does not match an offer sheet, it may receive draft-pick compensation, depending on the terms of the offer sheet and on the player’s salary.

Restricted

In the National Basketball Association (NBA), a restricted free agent is a player who is eligible to sign an offer sheet with another team, but whose original team has the right to match the offer and retain him.

When a player’s contract expires, he is free to sign with any team. If the player’s original team wants to keep him, they can make him a qualifying offer, which is a one-year contract worth at least the NBA’s minimum salary for players of that player’s years of service. Players can also be restricted free agents if they have been played for three years or less and their original team has made them a qualifying offer.

If a restricted free agent signs an offer sheet with another team, his original team has seven days to match the offer and keep him. If the original team does not match the offer, the player becomes a free agent and can sign with any team, including his former team.

There are two types of restricted free agents: those who have been in the league for four or more years (unrestricted) and those who have been in the league for three years or less (restricted). Unrestricted free agents can sign with any team without their former team being able to match the offer. Restricted free agents can sign an offer sheet with any team, but their former team can choose to match the offer and keep them.
