You may have seen 22 players on the field during an NFL game, but that doesn’t mean that all of them are eligible receivers. In fact, only 11 players from each team are allowed to be on the field at the same time.

Offense

Quarterbacks

In the NFL, only one quarterback is on the field at a time.

Running Backs

NFL teams are required to have seven players on the line of scrimmage at all times. These players include:
-The quarterback
-Two running backs
-Two wide receivers
-A tight end
-An offensive lineman

Wide Receivers

Receivers are the offensive players in American football who line up outside of the offensive line. They are the primary targets for the quarterback during passing plays. Wide receivers can be split into two main categories: split end receivers and flanker receivers.

Split end receivers are the more traditional receiver, lining up on the outside of the formation with their inside foot slightly ahead of the line of scrimmage. They also need to be able to shed blockers quickly so they can make tackles in the backfield. Some DLs are also responsible for sacks, which occur when the quarterback is tackled behind the line of scrimmage.

Linebackers
