How the NFL Playoffs Work

The NFL Playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the end of the NFL regular season to determine the league’s champion. The playoffs were expanded to fourteen teams in 2020, which includes seven teams from each conference: the four division winners and three wild card teams.

Divisional Playoffs

In the divisional playoffs, the four division winners from the previous week’s Wild Card round play each other in two separate games. The higher seed hosts each game. These matches are single-elimination, meaning that the loser is immediately out of the playoffs while the winner moves on to the Conference Championships.

Conference Championships

In order to make it to the Super Bowl, teams first have to compete in their conference championship games. The conference championship games are the NFL’s version of the semifinal games. There are two conference championship games, one for each conference. The teams that win their respective conference championship games then advance to the Super Bowl.

The two conferences in the NFL are the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). Each conference is made up of 16 teams. The NFC is made up of teams from the National Football League’s National Division and American Division. The AFC is made up of teams from the National Football League’s American Division and Coastal Division.

Each team in a conference plays every other team in its conference once during the regular season. At the end of the regular season, the team with the best record in each division advances to the playoffs as a division winner. The two second-place teams with the next best records in each conference also advance to the playoffs as wild card teams

Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is the biggest and most important game in the NFL, and it’s one of the biggest sporting events in the world. It’s a single game that determines the champion of the league, and it’s usually played on the first Sunday in February. The game is played between the two conference champions, either the AFC (American Football Conference) and NFC (National Football Conference).

The game is usually close and exciting, and it often comes down to the final few minutes. The winning team gets a big trophy called the Lombardi Trophy, named after legendary coach Vince Lombardi. The losing team doesn’t get anything, except for maybe a participation trophy.

The Super Bowl is also known for its commercials, which are often some of the best and most expensive commercials on TV all year. And of course, there’s always a half-time show featuring a big musical act. This year’s half-time show will feature Jennifer Lopez and Shakira.

How Many Teams Make the Playoffs?

The NFL playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the end of the regular season to determine the NFL champion. As of the 2020 NFL season, 14 teams qualify for the playoffs each year. Seven teams are division winners, which are seeded 1-4, and the other six teams are the Wild Card teams, which are seeded 5-10.

6 teams from each conference

In the current NFL playoff system, which was adopted in 2002, 6 teams from each conference qualify for the playoffs. 4 division winners and 2 wild card teams. The 4 division winners are seeded 1-4 based on their record, with the top seed getting a bye week in the first round of the playoffs. The 2 wild card teams are seeded 5-6 and play each other in the first round, with the winner playing the lowest remaining seed.

4 division winners and 2 wild card teams

In each conference, the four division winners and the two wild card teams (the two teams with the best won-lost-tied records who did not win their divisions) qualify for the playoffs. The four division winners are seeded 1 through 4 based on their overall won-lost-tied record, and the wild card teams are seeded 5 and 6.

What Happens if Two Teams Tie?

In the NFL, there are four divisions in each conference. The winner of each divisional playoff game then advances to the conference championship game. The two conference champions advance to the Super Bowl, the NFL’s championship game. The conference champion with the better record will host the game.

Head-to-head record

If two teams have the same record, the tiebreaker reverts to head-to-head record. So if the Steelers and Titans both finish 8-8, Pittsburgh would make the playoffs because it swept Tennessee in the regular season.

Record in common games

In the event that two teams have the same record, the NFL utilizes a tiebreaker system to determine which team will advance to the playoffs. If two teams are tied for a divisional title or a wild card berth, the first tiebreaker is their record in common games. If they played each other head-to-head, that game would be counted first.

If they did not play each other head-to-head, then each team’s record against the other teams in their conference are compared. If one team has a better record against those common opponents, then they would win the tiebreaker. If both teams have identical records in common games, then the next tiebreaker would be used.

Record in conference

In the event that two teams have the same record in their conference, the following tiebreakers will be used, in order:
-Head-to-head matchup
-Record in divisional games
-Record against common opponents
-Strength of victory (the combined won/lost record of all the teams your team has beaten)
-Strength of schedule (the combined won/lost record of all the teams your team has played)
-Coin toss

What Happens if Three or More Teams Tie?

In the NFL, there are four playoff teams. The top two teams in each conference (AFC and NFC) advance to the playoffs. If three or more teams tie for the same record, the tiebreaker rules come into play. The tiebreaker rules are as follows:

Apply the same tiebreakers in order until one team emerges

While it’s rare for three or more teams to tie in the NFL standings, it does happen occasionally. And when it does, the league applies a set of tiebreakers in order to determine which teams make the playoffs, and in what seed order.

The first tiebreaker is head-to-head competition. If three or more teams are tied, and they have all played each other head-to-head during the season, then the team with the best record in those head-to-head games is awarded the higher playoff seed.

If two or more teams are still tied after applying the head-to-head tiebreaker, then the next tiebreaker is division record. If all of the teams involved in the tie are from the same division, then their records within the division are compared. The team with the best division record is awarded the higher playoff seed.

If two or more teams are still tied after applying both of the above tiebreakers, then their conference records are compared. The team with the better conference record is awarded the higher playoff seed.

And finally, if two or more teams are still tied after all of the above tiebreakers have been applied, then a coin flip will be used to determine which team receives which playoff seed.
