What is the NBA playoff format?

The National Basketball Association (NBA) playoffs are a best-of-seven elimination tournament held annually after the NBA’s regular season to decide the league’s champion. The tournaments seeds are based on each team’s record. The first three rounds of the playoffs, known as the NBA Playoffs, are best-of-seven series in which each team plays one home game and one away game against its opponent.

If a team wins four games they advance to the next round, while a loss results in elimination from the playoffs. For the Finals, the better seeded team will always have home court advantage (Games 1, 2, 5 and 7) regardless of whether they had a better record than their opponent during the regular season.

As of 2020, eight teams from each of the two conferences qualify for the playoffs each year. These sixteen teams consist of six division winners and two wildcard teams. The two conference champions then compete in the NBA Finals.

NBA Finals

The NBA Finals is the championship series of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Eastern and Western conference champions play a best-of-seven game series to determine the league champion. The winners of the NBA Finals are awarded the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy, which was named after former NBA commissioner Larry O’Brien. The Boston Celtics have the most championships, with 17.

How many rounds are in the NBA Finals?

The NBA Finals is the championship series of the National Basketball Association (NBA), a North American professional basketball league. The event was named after the original division that was created to house teams from Chicago and Toronto, the Eastern and Western Division, which eventually became the Eastern and Western Conference. The Finals were first played in 1947 between the Philadelphia Warriors and the New York Knicks, with the Warriors winning in four games.

From 1947 to 1954, the NBA Finals were played between the division champions of the Eastern and Western Division. In 1955, a transcontinental playoff system was implemented wherein the division champions would play each other in a best-of-seven series to determine who would advance to the NBA Finals.

The current playoffs system was adopted in 1984, when the number of teams in each conference was increased from 9 to 12. In this system, 8 teams in each conference qualify for the playoffs. The four division winners are seeded 1-4 based on their regular season record, while the remaining 4 teams are seeded 5-8 regardless of conference affiliation.

The first two rounds of the playoffs are played within each conference, with all games played at home sites. The first round is a best-of-five series, while during second round series become best-of-sevens. No matter how many games it takes for a team to win, all games in rounds one and two are spread over a span of two weeks.

From there, the conference champions face each other in the NBA Finals. Unlike all other rounds in the playoffs which follow a 2-2–1–1–1 format (the team with home court advantage hosts games 1, 2, 5 and 7), during NBA Finals home court advantage is determined by regular season record regardless of whether one team or both teams finished with inferior records; thus it is possible for both teams playing in the NBA Finals to have had better won-loss records than their opponents during regular season play. The format used during NBA Finals is 2–3–2 (the team with home court advantage plays at home for games 1, 2 ,6 and 7).

What is the NBA Finals format?

In the NBA Finals, the two remaining teams in the NBA Playoffs compete for the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy. The best-of-seven series is played in a 2-2-1-1-1 format, meaning that one team will have home court advantage. The team with the better regular season record will have home court advantage throughout the entire NBA Finals.
