How the draft works
The NFL draft is an annual event in which the 32 teams in the National Football League (NFL) select new players for their rosters. The draft order is determined by each team’s record from the previous season. The better a team’s record, the later it picks in each round. Sixteen teams make the playoffs, and those that do not make the playoffs are given higher draft picks. Drafting order does not necessarily determine how successful a team will be – sometimes, so-called “bad teams” have good players that have been drafted high, whereas “good teams” sometimes have high draft picks that select poor players – but it is generally believed that having a higher pick indicates that a team needs more improvement than one with a lower pick. Each team is allowed 10 minutes to make its selection during each round of the draft.
How many rounds are in the draft?
There are typically seven rounds in the NFL draft. However, this can vary depending on how many trades have been made. For example, if a team trades its first-round pick to another team, that team will then have an extra first-round pick. As a result, there could be more than seven rounds in the draft.
