How Many Teams Are In The NFL?

The NFL is divided into two conferences, the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC), each of which is made up of 16 teams.

American Football Conference

There are a total of 32 teams in the NFL, 16 in the American Football Conference (AFC) and 16 in the National Football Conference (NFC). The AFC is divided into two divisions: the East and the West. Each division has four teams. The NFC is also divided into two divisions: the East and the West. The NFC East has four teams and the NFC West has six teams.

AFC East

The AFC East is a division of the National Football League (NFL)’s American Football Conference (AFC) that consists of four teams: the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, and New England Patriots. All four teams are based in the Northeast United States. The AFC East is one of the most competitive divisions in the NFL.

The Bills have won two NFL championships (1964 and 1965), but haven’t appeared in the Super Bowl since appearing in back-to-back Super Bowls following the 1990 and 1991 seasons. The Jets have been to one Super Bowl (III), winning it outright en route to becoming the first AFL team to do so. The Dolphins have won two Super Bowls (VII and VIII) and appeared in three more (XVII, XVIII, and XIX). When the Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams 13-3 in Super Bowl LIII, it marked their sixth Super Bowl title overall, all of which have come since 2001. This game also featured the lowest scoring output by any team in a Super Bowl to date.

AFC North

The AFC North is a division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). It was created prior to the 1970 season when the NFL realigned its teams into two conferences. The four current members of the division are the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, and Pittsburgh Steelers.

The AFC North is considered one of the more competitive divisions in the NFL. Three AFC North teams (Browns, Bengals, Steelers) have won at least one Super Bowl and all four teams have reached the conference championship game at least once (Browns twice, Bengals three times, Steelers eight times, Ravens twice). In fact, since 2000, only six NFL teams have made it to the Super Bowl more than once and all six are from either the AFC North or NFC East.

AFC South

The AFC South is a division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). It was created before the 2002 NFL season when the league realigned divisions after expanding to 32 teams. Four teams currently compete in the AFC South: the Houston Texans, the Indianapolis Colts, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Tennessee Titans.

AFC West

The AFC West is made up of four teams: the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers, and Oakland Raiders.
