The NFL playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the regular season to determine the NFL champion. Following the 2020 regular season, there are 14 teams in the playoffs. The number of teams in the NFL playoffs has increased over time.
How the NFL Playoffs Work
The NFL playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the regular season to determine the National Football League (NFL) champion. Six teams from each of the league’s two conferences qualify for the playoffs based on regular season records, and a tie-breaking system is used to seed the teams within their conference. In the playoffs, seeded teams are matched according to their seed and divisional standing, and they compete in one-game eliminations until a conference champion is crowned. The conference champions then face each other in the Super Bowl, which is usually held in early February, to decide the league’s overall champion.
How Many Teams Are In The NFL Playoffs?
The NFL playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the end of the regular season to determine the NFL champion. As of the 2022 season, there are a total of 14 teams in the NFL playoffs. These teams are the two division winners from each conference (four from the AFC and four from the NFC), and two wild-card teams from each conference (two from the AFC and two from the NFC).
Divisional Playoffs
The Divisional Playoffs are the second round of the NFL playoffs. The four teams that win in the Wild Card round move on to play the top seed in each conference. In the AFC, it would be the Kansas City Chiefs vs. the Baltimore Ravens and in the NFC, it would be the New Orleans Saints vs. the Green Bay Packers. These games are set for January 15-16, 2022.
Conference Championships
After the NFL’s Wild Card Weekend and Divisional Round, we are down to the NFC and AFC Conference Championships. The San Francisco 49ers will take on the Green Bay Packers at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California for the NFC crown, while the Kansas City Chiefs will host the Tennessee Titans at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri for the AFC title.
Super Bowl
How many teams are in the NFL playoffs? This is a question that is often asked by football fans. The answer depends on the year, as the NFL playoffs format has changed several times over the years.
Currently, there are six teams from each conference that make the playoffs (for a total of 12 teams). However, this was not always the case. From 1933 to 1966, only four teams from each conference made the playoffs (eight teams total). In 1967, the NFL increased the number of playoff teams to 16 (10 from each conference). This remained the case until 1978, when it was decreased back to 14 (seven from each conference).
The current playoff format was implemented in 2002. Under this system, four division winners and two wild-card teams from each conference make the playoffs. The division winners are seeded one through four in each conference based on their regular season record, with the top seed receiving a first-round bye. The wild-card teams are seeded five and six. In the first round of the playoffs, which is known as “wild card weekend”, the fifth seed plays the sixth seed in each conference while the first and second seeds receive a bye.
NFL Playoff Seeding
The NFL playoff seeding Predictions are out and it’s looking like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers could be the top two seeds in the NFC. The New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks, and Los Angeles Rams are all fighting for the final playoff spot.
Divisional Winners
The divisional winners will be the four teams with the best record in each conference. These teams will be seeded one through four based on their record, with the team with the best record being seeded one, and so on. The divisional winners will then host the wild card teams in the first round of the playoffs.
Wild Card Teams
There are four Wild Card teams in the NFL Playoffs. The seeding is done by conference, with the two best teams in each conference getting a bye to the divisional round. The four Wild Card teams then play each other in the first round.
The Wild Card round is a single elimination tournament, so the winner of each game advances to the divisional round, where they will play one of the two bye teams.
TheWild Card teams are seeded #5 and #6 in their conference. In recent years, there has been some debate about whether or not the playoff system is fair to these teams, as they often have to play on the road in the first round.
NFL Playoff Bracket
There are four teams in each conference in the NFL Playoffs. The four division winners and two wild-card teams from each conference make up the field. The divisional round is when the playoffs start. The top seed in each conference will get a bye to the divisional round.
AFC Playoff Bracket
The American Football Conference (AFC) playoffs are a postseason tournament that determines the champion of the AFC, which is one of the two conferences under the National Football League (NFL). The tournament culminates in the AFC Championship Game. In 1994, a sixth playoff team was added in each conference due to the expansion to 30 teams with the addition of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Carolina Panthers. In 2020, an additional playoff team was added in each conference, expanding each conference’s playoff field to seven teams.
The four division winners and two wild card teams (the two best teams among all remaining non-division winners) from each conference compete in the AFC playoffs. The four division winners are seeded 1–4 based on their overall won-lost-tied record, with the highest winning team being seeded 1 and playing at home against the lowest winning team, who is seeded 4; while the second-highest winning team is seeded 2 and playing at home against the second-lowest winning team, who is seeded 3. The two wild card teams are seeded 5 and 6; like division winners they also play at home—however this time it would be against one of either division leaders that did not win their respective divisions—but unlike division winners these seeds may come from any part of their conference’s standings so long as they finished above .500 for the season. Because both wild card positions can conceivably come from anywhere within their conferences’ standings (or even from any non-division leader’s position past fourth place), it makes for an often wide open and unpredictable race down to both spots; indeed sometimes a non-division leader with a rather mediocre record such as an 8–8 may back into either a wild card spot or even first round bye while a more dominant 11–5 squad misses out altogether simply because they happen to finish third or worse within their divisions behind not just one but possibly even two other very strong contenders. Conversely because all four division leaders by virtue of having won their divisions are assured at least one home game there have been many instances where both wild card spots were occupied by 10–6 squads yet neither made it beyond their first playoff games while 9–7 division runners up did advance further simply by virtue of hosting 10–6 seeds in those initial contests.
The playoffs follow a single-elimination format whereby each team competitively plays each other once over a span of four weeks until only two teams remain—one from each conference. These two remaining teams then compete in either the AFC Championship Game for a chance to attend Super Bowl LIX—the biggest professional American football championship game of them all which determines both this year’s league champion and National Football League MVP award recipient—or alternatively if they had already secured that right via clinching either their conference’s best regular season record or one of its six available playoff berths (assuming it isn’t able to do so by winning its division outright) then instead play each other in what is popularly known as that year’s “AFC Wild Card Game”.
