Umpires in baseball by league
There are umps at every level of baseball. But, the number of umpires working in each league varies. For example, Major League Baseball (MLB) has 68 umpires. That’s a lot more than the 13 umpires who work in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League (PCL). Here’s a breakdown of the number of umpires in each professional baseball league.
American League
There are seven umpires in baseball: four in the field and three behind the plate. The American League uses the designated hitter rule, so there is always a DH in the game. This means that there is one less position player on the field, which gives the AL an advantage over the National League.
Each league has its own rules and regulations, so it’s important to know which league you’re playing in before you start your game. If you’re not sure, ask an umpire or player from either team.
National League
The National League and the American League are the two organizations that make up Major League Baseball in the United States and Canada. Each league has three umpires who work behind the plate for every game. These six umpires rotate positions throughout each game. The home plate umpire is responsible for making all calls on balls and strikes, as well as any other decisions that need to be made concerning the batter. The first base umpire is responsible for calls made at first base, as well as any plays involving the batter-runner once he becomes a runner. The second base umpire is responsible for any plays made at second base, as well as any plays involving the runners on first and second base. The third base umpire is responsible for any plays made at third base, as well as any plays involving the runners on third base.
Umpires in baseball by division
There are five Major League Baseball umpiring crews, which means there are five umpires in baseball. There are also three Triple-A umpiring crews and numerous Double-A and Single-A umpiring crews.

The American League East is a Major League Baseball (MLB) division that includes Toronto, Baltimore, Boston, Tampa Bay, and New York. In baseball, the umpire is the person who makes the calls on the field. Each MLB team has four umpires: one for each base. The home plate umpire is in charge of the game.

The American League West is made up of the following teams: Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners, Oakland Athletics, and Texas Rangers.
Each team in the American League West has four umpires assigned to them. Two of the umpires are assigned to home plate, while the other two umpires are assigned to first and third base.
National League East
In baseball, the umpire is the person charged with officiating the game, including beginning and ending the game, enforcing the rules of the game and making any necessary decisions to amend such rules during the course of play. There are typically four umpires in professional baseball — one at each base position — but there have been as many as six per game in some amateur contests. The use of multiple umpires per game was once common in professional baseball, but has since fallen out of favor.
The National League East is made up of the following teams: Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals. Each team has two umpires assigned to their games — one for home games and one for away games.
