He grew up idolizing his older brothers Alexis and Thanasis, who both played basketball professionally in Greece. Giannis started playing basketball when he was nine years old.

He was born in Athens, Greece to Nigerian immigrants, Charles and Veronica. He has four brothers: Francis, Thanasis, Kostas, and Alexandros. He also has a sister named Alaina.
