NFL history
NFL history. NFL history began in 1920 with the founding of the American Professional Football Association (APFA). The APFA became the National Football League (NFL) two years later. The National Football League (NFL) was founded in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) with ten teams from four states. The first game was played on October 3, 1920, between the teams representing the cities of Dayton and Columbus. Jim Thorpe, considered one of the best athletes of his time, was a member of the Canton Bulldogs, one of the original teams in the APFA. The Bulldogs won that game against Columbus, 14-0.
Merger with AFL in 1970
In 1970, the NFL experienced a major change when it merged with the American Football League (AFL). The AFL had been founded in 1959 and consisted of 10 teams. The NFL had 16 teams at the time of the merger. As part of the agreement, each AFL team was absorbed into the NFL.
