How Much Does A NFL Football Weigh?

Official Weigh-In

The offical weight of an NFL football is 22 oz. They are typically inflated to 12.5 to 13.5 psi. The circumference of the football should be 27 3/4 to 28 1/2 inches.

Pre-Season

During the pre-season, each football is required to weigh between 12.5 and 13.5 ounces and must be inflated to between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds per square inch. If a football falls outside of these measurements, it will be sent back to the manufacturer.

Regular Season

During the regular season, NFL footballs can weigh between 14 and 15 ounces. They are required to be inflated to a pressure between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds per square inch.

Post-Season

During the regular season, all balls used by NFL teams must weigh between 14 and 15 ounces and be inflated to between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds per square inch. But for the playoffs, teams are allowed to use balls that are a little bit heavier — between 14 and 15 ounces — but they still have to be inflated to between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds per square inch.

Game Day Ball

On any given Sunday, during football season, you can find me in my living room, yelling at the TV. One of the many things I love about football is that no matter what, the game will go on. There are even rules in place in the event that something does happen to the game ball. In this article, we will cover the weight of a NFL football, as well as how the weight can vary depending on the game situation.

New balls

A new NFL football is slick and shiny, with the laces freshly waxed. The pebbled leather has a rich feel, almost like a baseball. It’s brand new, and it’s perfect.

But how much does a NFL football weigh? That’s not an easy question to answer, because the weight of a football can vary depending on a number of factors.

For example, a cold football will weigh less than a warm football. A dry football will weigh less than a wet football. And an underinflated football will weigh less than a properly inflated football.

At its official website, the NFL states that “the weight of the ball must be no less than 14 ounces and no greater than 15 ounces.” But that only tells us the minimum and maximum weight of the ball. The actual weight of a ball can be anywhere in that range.

The official size of a NFL football is 11 to 11 1/2 inches long and 22 to 22 1/2 inches in circumference at the widest point. The balls are inflated to between 12 1/2 and 13 1/2 pounds per square inch.

Used balls

All footballs that are used during an NFL game must be examined and approved by the game officials two hours before kickoff. Once the balls have been inspected, they are returned to the team’s locker room where they are prepared for use in the game.

During the game, each team is allowed to have 12 balls on the sidelines that can be used at any time. In addition to these 12 balls, each team is allowed to have 2 more balls in their possession for a total of 14. These extra balls are for emergency situations, such as if one of the game balls gets wet or muddy.

At halftime, the officials inspect all of the balls again and each team is given an equal number of clean balls to use in the second half.

Other Weigh-Ins

The NFL ball’s circumference is 27 3/4 to 28 1/2 inches, it is 11 to 11 1/4 inches long and its inflated weight is 14 to 15 ounces. For high school and college play, the ball can be a little larger and heavier – up to a maximum of 23 inches in circumference, 28 1/2 inches long and 16 ounces.

High school

High school footballs must weigh between 14 and 15 ounces and be 28.5 to 29.5 inches in circumference. The long axis of the ball must be between 11.25 and 11.75 inches, and the short axis must be between 20.75 and 21.25 inches.

College

college footballs can weigh as much as 5 ounces less than NFL footballs. Although both balls have the same circumference (11 inches), college balls have a lower overall weight because they are not required to be as inflated as NFL balls. The inflation of a football is measured by pounds per square inch (PSI). The PSI of a college ball is 12.5-13.5, while the PSI of an NFL ball is 13-13.5.

Professional

On average, an NFL football weighs 14 ounces. However, they can range in weight from 13 to 15 ounces. The size of the football is also important. The official NFL football is 11 to 11 1/2 inches long and 22 to 22 1/2 inches in circumference at the center.
