In May 2015, at Payback, then-WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins defeated United States Champion John Cena in a “Winner Take All” match to unify both titles. The following year at Survivor Series on November 20, 2016, then-WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar defeated then-WWE World Heavyweight Champion AJ Styles to unify both titles again and becoming the sole holder in history of what has been later renamed WWE Championship. ButStyles regained the title back at next month’s Tables Ladders & Chairs event.

WWE introduced the title on June 27, 2003, with then-SmackDown General Manager Stephanie McMahon announcing a tournament to crown its inaugural champion. The United States Championship began as a regional championship created by and defended in the southern United States promotions Georgia Championship Wrestling (GCW) and Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling (MACW) prior to being acquired by Jim Crockett Promotions (JCP). JCP was then acquired by Ted Turner’s World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1988 and was later integrated into Turner’s professional wrestling promotion World Wrestling Federation (WWF), which became today’s WWE in 2002.
When WCW was purchased by Vince McMahon and merged into the WWF in 2001, the title was deactivated; however, it was brought back just two years later when then-SmackDown General Manager Stephanie McMahon announced a tournament to crown its inaugural champion at Vengeance on June 26, 2003. The title has been defended on both Raw and SmackDown since its reintroduction. Rey Mysterio has had the longest reign overall with his second at around 240 days being almost double that of anyone else; Mysterio also has had several individual reigns that are among the ten longest in history including his first at 175 days being fifth longest as well as his third at 133 days being ninth longest.

The current holder is Brock Lesnar, who is in his first reign.
WWE Universal Championship
The WWE Universal Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE on the SmackDown brand. It is one of two world titles for WWE’s main roster, alongside the WWE Championship on Raw. The current champion is Brock Lesnar, who is in his first reign.
WWE introduced the Universal Championship in 2016 at SummerSlam, a pay-per-view event produced annually by WWE. At that event, then-WWE Champion Seth Rollins defeated new Raw draftee Finn Bálor to become the inaugural champion. The title was initially represented by a custom physical belt before transitioning to a standard design used for all championships in 2017.
As of June 2019, there have been four reigns and one vacancy. Lesnar has been champion for the longest combined amount of time at 522 days; he also has the longest single reign at 470 days. Bálor had the shortest reign at 22 hours, due to having to relinquish the title immediately after winning it due to injury. The title has changed hands twice (not counting Lesnar’s two vacates)— once at SummerSlam, and once at an untitled pay-per-view event (PPV). It has been held by two men and one woman (as a result of WWE’s policy of gender equality), with Becky Lynch being the first and only woman to hold it. Samoa Joe and AJ Styles have both held both world titles in WWE (the Universal Championship and the WWE Championship) simultaneously – referred to as a “double champions”, with Joe holding them for six days and Styles for eight days as of 2019. Of WWE’s current male champions across all brands, only Kofi Kingston (WWE Champion on SmackDown) has not won this title; while Lynch is also currently women’s champion on Raw (as well as holding both titles simultaneously until losing the former at Extreme Rules).
The Universal Championship was established as WWE’s second world championship when Raw got exclusive rights to its own world championship following WWE’s purchase of WCW and ECW in 2001 (the original WCW World Heavyweight Championship was retired while ECW did not have a world heavyweight championship). At that time, there was only one primary world championship shared between both brands – known as the Undisputed WWE Championship – which remained until August 29, 2016 when then-champion Seth Rollins defeated then-intercontinental champion Dolph Ziggler,RAW Women’s Champion Sasha Banksand SmackDown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch in a Tables match following interference from Stephanie McMahon to unify all three titles into what became known as simply “the women’s championship”. This act made Raw once again have its own exclusive world championship – now known as simply “the Universal Championship” – leaving SmackDown without an active primary world title until December 2016 when then commissioner Shane McMahon unveiled that brand’s inaugural world championship – later named “the WWE Championship” – after having vacated it himself weeks earlier due to losing a match against AJ Styles; this made the Universal ChampionshipRaw’s sixth exclusive world title while also making it indisputably superior over its blue brand counterpart in terms of name recognition value – being that it retained much more historical legacy than what was effectively a completely new title with no lineage dating back before its December 2016 reintroduction despite also having originally debuted less than four months prior in August 2016 as opposed to nearly 19 years earlier in April 1999 when it was first introduced as simply “the World Heavyweight Championship”.
