How much space does a tennis court need? This is a question that is often asked by people who are looking to build a tennis court.
Introduction
Of all the questions we receive here at Court Care, none is more common than, “How much space do I need for a tennis court?” We understand why this is such a difficult question to answer. After all, tennis courts come in all shapes and sizes. Not to mention, the size of your tennis court will greatly affect the gameplay. In this article, we will answer this question once and for all.
First, let’s start with the dimensions of a regulation tennis court. A regulation tennis court is 78 feet long and 27 feet wide for singles matches or 36 feet wide for doubles matches. The service line is 21 feet from the back fence, and the baseline is located 43 feet from the back fence. So, if we assume that you will need at least 5 feet on each side of the court for player movements, you will need a minimum of 88 feet by 42 feet of space for a regulation doubles court or 93 feet by 37 feet of space for a regulation singles court.
Of course, these are just minimum requirements. If you want to be able to move around the court freely and not feel cramped during your game, you will need more space than these minimums. We recommend that you have at least 12-15 feet of clearance on each side of the court and 20-25 feet of clearance at the back of the court. This will give you plenty of room to move around and make plays without feeling restricted.
Now that you know the minimum requirements for a tennis court, you can begin planning where to put your new addition!

The amount of space needed for a tennis court
Tennis courts come in different sizes, with the most common size being 78 feet by 36 feet. This size can accommodate both singles and doubles matches. If you’re planning on playing competitively, you’ll need a regulation-size court. But if you just want to play for fun, a smaller court will suffice. Let’s take a look at some of the other factors that affect the size of a tennis court.
How much space is needed for a regulation size tennis court?
A regulation size tennis court is 78 feet long and 36 feet wide for singles matches, or 84 feet long and 42 feet wide for doubles. The playing service area shall be a rectangle measuring 21 feet 2 inches by 13 feet 5 inches. The net shall be 3.5 feet high at the posts and 3 feet high in the center. There are other dimensions that are specific to certain lines on the court, but those are the basics of a regulation size tennis court.
How much space is needed for a non-regulation size tennis court?
A tennis court is rectangular and divided in half by a net. The size of a regulation tennis court for singles matches is 78 feet (23.77 meters) long and 27 feet (8.23 meters) wide, for a total of 2,106 square feet (196 square meters). Of this area, 884 square feet (82 square meters) are service courts and 1,222 square feet (113.77 square meters) are playing surface.
However, not all tennis courts are regulation size. In fact, many are smaller due to space constraints at the playing venue. For example, high school courts are typically 60 feet (18.28 meters) by 21 feet (6.40 meters), while college courts can be 60 feet (18.28 meters) by 25 feet (7.62 meters).
If you’re planning to build a tennis court on your property, you’ll need to factor in the dimensions of the playing surface as well as the space needed for any surrounding walkways or other features. When it comes to dimensions, a good rule of thumb is to add 10 percent to the length and width of the playing surface to account for walkways, fencing, and other necessary components. This means that a regulation size tennis court would require an area measuring 88 feet by 37 feet, or 3,276 square feet (304 square meters).
Conclusion
A tennis court needs a minimum of about 11,000 square feet, including the areas for the playing surface, service lines, alleys, and sidelines. The minimum recommended size for a tennis court is 60 feet by 120 feet. This dimensions include space for Singles matches as well as Doubles matches. If you want to add other amenities to your tennis court, such as a hit-up wall or seating for spectators, you’ll need to factor in additional space.
