In December 2009, Aj Lee competed in a battle royal to determine the inaugural FCW Divas Champion, which was won by Naomi Night. On February 16, 2010, she defeated Naomi to win the championship. She held the title for three months until Naomi regained it on May 18. In June, Aj Lee was traded to the SmackDown brand as part of WWE’s supplemental draft.

On her SmackDown television debut on June 29, she quickly began a scripted rivalry with Vickie Guerrero, who became outraged over Aj’s encroachment on her authority and position as SmackDown General Manager. This led to Vickie Guerrero banning all divas from ringside during matches and later causing Aj Lee to lose a match by disqualification after Vickie interfered. The rivalry between Vickie Guerrero and Aj Lee continued until late 2010 when Guerrero “imploded”, leading to an alliance between Guerrero and Dolph Ziggler which would continue until early 2011 when Guerrero turned on Ziggler due to his losing streak.

Aj Lee then feuded with Layla El and won a number one contender’s match for the WWE Women’s Championship at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs in December 2010; however, due to an injury sustained by then champion Natalya Neidhart, the match never took place and Neidhart retained her title via forfeit.

Independent Circuit

Bryan Danielson, who would later become AJ Styles in WWE, was the first person to contact Lee after seeing one of her matches. He invited her to come train with him at the wrestling school he ran called Ring of Honor (ROH). ROH is an independent wrestling company that has produced many top WWE Superstars such as Seth Rollins, Daniel Bryan and Kevin Owens.

Lee began training with Danielson inRing of Honor in 2005 but left the promotion in 2006 due to personal issues. She would later return to ROH in 2007 and wrestle there until 2009 when she signed a contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).
