After briefly working on the independent circuit and in Extreme Championship Wrestling, Dumas signed with WWE in 1999.

Lita’s debut

Lita made her WWE television debut on the July 23, 2000, episode of SmackDown!, coming to the aid of Matt Hardy (with whom she was having a storyline affair), who was being attacked by Essa Rios. Throughout the next few months, Lita appeared sporadically on Raw and SmackDown! doing commentary or sitting in the audience. She was also a part of an angle on the November 2 episode of SmackDown! in which The Dudley Boyz put her through a table.

Lita’s retirement

On November 10, 2006, at the ECW home video release DECADE OF DECADENCE, Lita made a surprise appearance to thank the fans for their support during her career. Lita’s ECW appearance marked the first time she had appeared on WWE television since her retirement announcement ten months earlier.

Lita and Matt Hardy began dating in 1999 and were seemingly inseparable both on-screen and off. The couple’s real-life relationship played out in front of the WWE Universe during some of the most dramatic moments in WWE history, including Lita’s infamous love triangle with Edge.

The couple’s real-life relationship ultimately came to an end in 2005, but Hardy and Lita remained close friends and continued to work together until Hardy’s departure from WWE in 2010.
