Elina Svitolina’s Early Life
Elina Svitolina was born on September 12, 1994, in Odessa, Ukraine. Her father, Mykola Svitolin, is a professional football player and her mother, Iryna, is a doctor. Svitolina has two older sisters, Valeria and Oleksandra. When she was four years old, her family moved to Kyiv so that her father could play football for Dynamo Kyiv.

Svitolina was born on 12 September 1994, in Odessa, Ukraine, to Oleksandr Svitolin and Olena Tymchenko. Her father is a businessman, while her mother worked as a doctor before becoming a full-time tennis coach. Svitolina has an elder brother, Yevgeniy, who is also a tennis player.
Svitolina began playing tennis at the age of five. She was coached by her mother until she was ten years old, when she began working with Sergei Tarasevich.
Svitolina’s Tennis Career
Svitolina’s professional tennis career began in September 2010, when she competed in her first $10,000 ITF tournament in Budapest, Hungary. In 2011, she won her first $25,000 tournament in T atheists, Turkey. The following year, Svitolina reached her first WTA final at the Baku Cup, where she lost to Shahar Pe’er.
In 2013, Svitolina reached the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time at the French Open. She also won her first WTA title that year at the Baku Cup.
Svitolina reached her first Premier 5 final at the Dubai Tennis Championships in 2015, where she lost to Simona Halep. She also reached the semifinals of a Premier Mandatory event for the first time at the Madrid Open that year.
2016 was a breakout year for Svitolina, as she won her second WTA title at the Dubai Tennis Championships and went on to reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at Wimbledon. She also reached her career-high singles ranking of No. 13 that year.
In 2017, Svitolina won two Premier 5 tournaments back-to-back at the Toronto and Cincinnati Masters. She also reached her second Grand Slam quarterfinal at the US Open.
Svitolina enjoyed even more success in 2018, winning her maiden Grand Slam title at the Wimbledon championships and becoming only the second Ukrainian woman to win a major singles title after Natalia Zvereva (who won two majors).
